*** Sky TV Cancellation & Negotiation Thread ***

We have just realised that my grandparents have been spending over £150pm on their sky package, a frightening amount of money and definitely more than they need to be spending. I think they have been with them over 20yrs and must have bene out of contract a while so just been on a rolling price.

They have offered a 24mth package on the website when I login but it's hardly any better. £43pm for broadband is apparently a deal, they are on the 35mb package.

I can't really move them away as they so used to the service and remote etc but the price is ridiculous.

£43/mth for a 35Mbps package is criminal. That's about an average price for 1Gbps. I understand they might not have FTTP, but the price is insanely high. Can you find another cheaper provider and remove it from their package.

The same reason why anyone else goes for glass i guess? Convenience? Plus I'm in the market for a new TV as mine is about 8 years old so is quite dated now.
What's convenient about it? You get a flaky UI, lose the ability to record and are stuck in a contract paying for a not especially great TV. I'd hang on to Q until they absolutely force you to leave.

I have to say, Sky (and to an extent VM) have done an incredible job of conditioning a generation of people that a TV guide and recording are an absolute necessity still in 2026.

Well, you do need a TV guide of sorts to set a recording, though generally I prefered a decent search feature more than the more traditional guide, or even better, something like the TiVo Wishlist feature.

Recording still seems pretty essential, means I can watch the programs I want when I want rather than when they happen to be broadcast, I don't have to sit through ads, and I have access to the recordings for as long as I want, rather than how ever long they happen to be on the broadcasters streaming service. Also works for channels that don't have catch up services, or for programs that aren't put onto their catchup services. Plus, also means I can still watch the program if it gets pulled from catch up for some reason, as happens occaisionally. Also, means the programs are nicely organised together in one place, rather than having to jump between multiple different apps and services.

Sky and Virgin these days are very much pushing people away from recording, not sure new customers can even get recording boxes from them any more, if they can it certainly involves jumping through hoops. They also were very much not the first to be offering PVR recording, I'd had a system for a few years before Sky+ showed up.

It would be fine to offer streaming instead, IF, the hardware was decent or they gave you an option to load an app onto Apple TV, you now know like Now TV...:p

Just a shame the Sports TV rights haven't caught up with on demand rewatching of live sporting events or maybe it would eat too much into reselling highlight packages

Is the sports thing still an issue? I know it used to be when I used NowTV to watch the F1 sometimes and the only option was to watch when it was broadcast or one of the scheduled repeats, you couldn't watch on catch up or watch from the start if you started watching late, but I assume they'd sorted that now streaming is the only option. Certainly way behind the official F1 app if that is the case, despite being massively more expensive.

You can sort of, watching from the start sometimes works other times it shows you the live show and then asks not much use for spoilers!

It is available on demand normally right after said hightlight show has aired in regular tv.

It’s still an issue for F1 at least. My dad lives abroad and was used to the F1 app. He was visiting whilst the last two races were on and thought “oh cool so I just get NowTV and I can start watching the 7am race when I get up”. Wrong. Can’t time shift, on demand not available until Ch4 had shown their highlights later in the day. He was rather annoyed and has now got a refund from Now.
