SKY TV + ESPN - options

We've had Sky TV in our house for a good few years now. We're currently paying £47.50 a month for all the channels, sky sports, music, movies the lot.

First off, is that paying over the odds or not? We've only got a basic box, no sky+ or HD channels. That seems like a lot of money to me, especially as it's all moving to sky plus and HD now, if we spoke to them could we cut that price a bit or is that the standard price?

My other question is how can you mix and match the channels you get? We only got it for the sports and movie channels really, very rarely watch anything else. Back when we signed up you had to have all the 'entertainment' channels as well before you could get sports and movies. Is that still the case or can you chop and change things better now?

Lastly, how does ESPN work? The whole reason for this re-think is that a lot of the guiness premiership rugby is going to be moving to espn with sky sports showing far fewer games next year, and this is the primary reason we have sky. Is it possible to get espn by itself or do you need 101 other packages as well?

I've had a look on the sky website but it's not that clear.

Thanks for any help.

dont get me started on sky in my opinion they are a rip off repeats after repeats i say it depends what you watch most on sky i wagtch the sport on sky but dont have sky i use a few good websites for that thats my rant. p.s NO you cant get ESPN on freeview well normal freeview you cannot.

You can get ESPN on freeview you know.

What's your current Sky package? Just Sports & Movies?
I've seen it on there actually but completely forgot about it. Just had a quick search and that's looking like £9.99 a month.

Current Sky package is everything I think, got all the movie, sport, kids, music, news, discovery channels and all the random ones that no-one will ever watch in a million years.

For free?!

Not for free.

Yeah, but not free.

Cancel it and get new package? Do you actually watch the music channels and other ones? No point in paying for them if you don't. You can get free Sky+ box if you are a new customer and SkyHD box for £50 I think the offer is now.

You can't get ESPN on 'Freeview', but you can get it on 'TopUpTV' via digital terrestrial.

The confusion comes because on digital terrestrial (i.e. digital TV through your normal aerial) there are 2 services running, Freeview and TopUpTV. TopUpTV run some of their own stuff, but you can also get ESPN through them as a standalone channel. It may seem a little picky pointing out the difference between Freeview and TopUpTV, but they are totally separate things, including the fact you need a set top box that can also do TopUpTV.

It costs about a tenner a month, but for that you only get the 1 standard definition channel and it doesn't broadcast in the morning.

As for ESPN on Sky and the prospect of a price drop, I can't see them doing too much to drop the price of your sub, but they may offer you a deal on a new HD box. ESPN would be another £9 on top of that subscription

In terms of the other channels you still need one 'mix', but if you've got more than one mix (there's 6 of them) you could stop those. If you've got all 6 mixes going down to 1 would save you £5 a month.

edit: Also, in terms of Sky movies you may be better off going for a DVD rental subscription - the movies are costing you ~£9 at the moment but iirc you can get pay as you go DVD rentals that would work out a lot cheaper than £9/month for most people, and you'd have a much greater choice as Sky seem quite slow at getting films on there after DVD release.

If you choose to get ESPN via TopUpTV without the extras then you can opt to get a viewing card and CAM that plug directly into a slot on the back of your TV - no set top boxes to worry about that way and can you can watch the channel directly via the built in EPG on the TV.

For one I would drop the movies, IMO they are a complete waste of money.

I agree. The movies just repeat and repeat. I signed up to it over the summer when the footy was off and couldn't wait to get rid of it cause once you watched the rotation once, it just keeps repeating.

Good luck in getting a discount from Sky.

Basic Sky with standard/Sky+ box and movies/sports isn't to bad. However the price quickly racks up when you start adding HD and multiroom subscriptions.

Thats quite a lot of cash going out each month on the TV

That entirely depends on the entertainment value he gets from Sky.

Lets consider other activities I've done recently in the name of entertainment.

Paintballing £35.00 for 6-7 hours
Gokarting £35.00 for 2 hours
Theatre £60.00 for a 2-3 hour show.
Basement Jaxx at the O2 £27.00 for 2 hours
Jimmy Carr £20.00 for 90 minutes of live stand up

we have full sub with HD and it's about £60, will prob drop HD when the year contract is up as the difference is barely noticeable
