I use Sky in Eastbourne and my connection is really taking it out of me. Last few days Sky randomly drops off its connection and then keeps flashing amber intermittently. When connected it lasts for few minutes. This goes on for a while before it stabilises.

Day 1 - it kept happening all day. Finally called sky and woman at the other end reset the configuration. It started to work again.

Day 2, went back to the connection issues. Guy on other end said it probably has to do with wiring. Moved it from an extension to main socket. Thing started working. Wondering if that was coincidental cos...

Day 3. Again same ****. Called Sky and they were no help at all. Apparently someone from the higher tech support will get back to me soon.
Opened up my telephone socket and found only 2 out of 6 wires connected. Pretty sure 3 out of 6 needs to be connected? Anyway wired the rest in. Seems a bit stable now but I am pretty sure that is all coincidental. This has been going on for 3 days now and Sky clearly has no idea what to do about
it.

I think it might b e a combination of things: poor service from sky + the rainy weather + bad wiring in this aging block of flats.

Thing is I am supposed to be working from home all of next week and this saturday -- tomorrow (cos I take Tuesdays off). I don't want to have to go to the office just because my internet is acting up.

Anyone else been having probs with Sky?

Are there any alternatives for a good reliable connection. I know there are 3G dongles but I don't want terrible data rates and connection. I am not going to be DLing stuff with it, but browsing the web and online games still requires something decent.

Put the wiring back how you found it. You'll never need more than two wires on a domestic phone line.

If you are still having problems when connected to the master socket's test socket then you've just got to keep annoying Sky until they properly diagnose and fix the problem.

Windy/wet weather messing with the external wiring is the most likely cause.

Sky will also say their service is for home domestic use only so telling them you need it for work won't do a thing to make them move any faster.

So the 2 times you called they got it working again?

Test socket, new filter, use the connection for a day or so. No dropouts? It's internal setup/wiring or faulty filter.
In test socket with dropouts? Get tier 2 to diagnose the issue, line noise, faulty equipment or exchange issue or maybe weather issue.

Yes sky tier 1 can be absolutely shocking, but the few simple steps around getting into your test socket and filter change can completely bypass to tier 2. Most tier 1 i've talked to are quiet good though.

Tier 2 (or CST as they get called internally apparently) told me tier 1 are basically there to check for internal issues, CST deal with external issues such as the line, the exchange etc.

That's true to an extent, tier 1 can fix most issues if the agent has half a brain and access to certain programs, but if your in the test socket with a new filter you have done the internal steps so tier 2 can diagnose line or equipment issues.
