I've been with Sky for about 4 years now, it's a 2meg line but my download speeds are - at best - 220kb/s. It has never gone over 220.

Not too long ago I checked the line with a speed test and it said the speed should be around 1,700?

I don't really know too much about connections or how they work, but I know that 220 is very slow, so I'd like some advice. I'm thinking about upgrading to the highest package they do.

What are peoples opinions of Sky as well? Should I look into another company, or stick with them?

can your line support there 20mb package?
and how far from the exchange are you?

I'm with sky currently and as i wish i could have all my equipment with one provider i can only receive a maximum of 4.5mb yet i receive only 2.2mb.

I'm moving to Virgin (tomorrow) and would rather pay the extra so that i get a better internet/download speeds

You're unclear what units you're using - the quoted 2 "meg" will likely be millions of bits per second, whereas some speedtests (and most download clients) will report speeds in some multiple of bytes per second.

If you're connected at 2Mbps (bits) and getting 220kB/s (bytes), that's fine.

That download speed is consistent with your line speed.

If you times your speed by 8 (Bytes to Bits) then you'll get around 1700.

As others have said, your download speeds are fine. Internet connections are generally advertised in Megabits (Mbps), downloads are generally measured in MegaBytes or KiloBytes (MBps or KBps) - Note the small b in bits and capital B in Bytes. There's 8 bits in a Byte, so 8*220 is 1760 Kbps.

If you're still interested in upgrading to 10/20Mbps post your line stats from the router page (Line attenuation and noise margin mainly), and we'll be able to tell you approximatly what you will get should you upgrade :).

Edit - Just read your question about peoples opinions of Sky. I'm very happy with them, im on their unlimited (upto 20Mbps) plan, and dont have a single complaint. I'm fairly close to the exchange so i sync at about 19Mbps, and download around 2MBps, and with no traffic management/FUP etc I can't complain at all. Since you already have Sky internet you don't have to worry about getting Sky TV in etc, so there's no reason to change ISPs imo :).

Edit again - I forgot to mention, my opinion above is based on their LLU service, check on www.samknows.com to make sure you're receiving their LLU service, Sky via BTWholesale is terrible afaik (you're probably on LLU since you're getting proper speeds tho) :).
