Of course, this could just be the Xeon/Enterprise side of things. But it looks like there may be big change coming in the next architecture.

Possibly a bit of evidence that consumer Cannonlake will indeed shift to 6+ cores and Quad channel memory? What with the rumours and all and now this it does look that way.
 
Well I've said it before and I'll say it again. Skylake-E will be my next system upgrade. Hopefully it'll work out.

Lots of cores are important to me for various tasks and I'm sure a Skylake-E system will happily last me another 5 or 6 years (if not longer).

As well as potentially more memory channels (which makes sense as your number of cores increase), the socket probably supports more PCIe lanes. With NVMe becoming popular as a storage solution, more PCIe lanes are required.

The socket is the same for Xeons and -E i7s in previous generations, I can't see that changing as it wouldn't be economically viable to produce a separate chipset and socket for i7s.

I note there are 6 DIMM slots (and probably another 6 on the other side), so six channel memory looks likely.

Maybe Intel have decide it's time for discrete graphics to die and are about unleash the Intel larrabee's upon us :p

Intel is releasing two Skylake Xeon platforms in 2017: Purley & Basin Falls

Purley is the bigger platform or the big daddy Skylake Xeon platform built for 2, 4 and 8+ sockets. This will be utilising LGA 3647 and hex channel DDR4. It will be using Lewisburg PCH and be on a socket P.

It looks like Skylake-X family won’t be compatible with the new Socket P (LGA 3647) which we saw earlier. That socket is being built for 2S, 4S and 8S+ configurations so 1S processors will still feature support on Socket R that is LGA 2011-3. Intel will be however making a new PCH known as Kaby Lake PCH which will allow compatibility for the Skylake-X and Skylake-W chips.


Basin Falls is the one socket platform codenamed Skylake W.

Basin Falls uses 4 channel DDR4 and utilises Kabylake PCH.

The one very interesting fact about Basin Falls is that it uses socket R which is LGA 2011.

However notice that Basin falls is using LGA 2061 but it is still called socket R.

I think Skylake-X (Skylake-E) is going to be based on Basin Falls platform and will be using LGA 2061.
