Currently running 2600k @ 4.4Ghz with a 500 GB ssd and 970gtx 8gb ram

Used for everything really photoshop, Video editing, gaming, InDesign etc

Is it worth the cash upgrade? Would you?

Ta :)

Depending on budget (£500-ish would be sufficient for mobo/processor/ram), you can pick up a nice 5820k for that.

Has 6 cores, 12 threads, which is great for photo and/or video editing, equivalent performance to Skylake for gaming (providing you overclock), and roughly the same price as the 6700k.

I upgraded from a 2600k @ 4.3GHz (terrible terrible motherboard) to a 4790k @ 4.7GHz.

I see no difference, but I had a lot of fun (to me) messing around with it so I'm happy with what I spent. I did however get the 4790k off them members market and I got my ASRock z97 extreme4 at a crazy crazy cheap price, so it didn't cost me THAT much after I sold me old stuff to a mate, maybe £120?. I think had I spent the money we are talking for a brand new 6700k with a brand new z(skylake) motherboard, I would probably be feeling the buyers remorse.

Budget wise I was thinking spending about £1k as I'll keep the 2600k as my 2nd machine and gut my current 2nd PC for its ssd's, hdd's and PSU etc

I'd need CPU, MB, ram, case, soundcard and maybe a faster ssd currently a 850 evo 500Gb

I've got a 2700k and Slylake looks pretty unappealing. 5820k looks a better bet but still not enough of a leap for me to get my wallet out.

I think that's where I am to be honest, having the same CPU and MB for over 4 years is just a little odd! I remember upgrading every 6 months but then I am old lol :D

If you would like to upgrade, I advise this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £293.99
1 x MSI X99A SLI Plus Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £179.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD432GM2400HC16QC01) £167.99
Total : £651.56 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

Then, for storage, there is not much of a real world benefit from an M.2 SSD at the moment, and the 850 Evo is one of the best SATA III SSDs there are, but if you must upgrade:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 PCI-e Gen3 8Gbps x 4 Solid State Drive (MZHPV256HDGL-00000) £139.99
Total : £148.69 (includes shipping : £7.25 Ex.VAT).

I don't know what you want from a case, what colour you want or anything like that, so I chose not to add it. And if I am honest, I know nothing about sound cards... But hopefully this should give you a little bit of an idea.

There's no real competition so all we're seeing is single figure gains from one generation to the next with a slow decline in overclocking ability. The extra cores of the 5820k are more appealing than the IPC gains on Skylale but I'm primarily a gamer and the support for >4 cores isn't there yet.

I'm more likely to upgrade for other reasons such as PCI-E SSD support than actual the increase in CPU performance if this trend continues. Not seen a killer feature yet though to twist my arm. M2 SSDs are overpriced and I'm deeply unconvinced they're worth the money yet.

In the same boat.

2012 build Im on and I really dont see the need for an upgrade whatsoever from my 3770k which is a shame as I too remember loving upgrading from things like an Athlon 1200XP to a 3500 etc
