I'm currently on an FX-8350 and wanting to upgrade. I would like to wait and see what Zen is like but I doubt I'm willing to delay that long so.... I need lots of processing power for VMs and database work. I'm looking at a 5820K. I don't normally buy a generation behind, but I just don't see a lot of extra in the 6870 - faster but fewer cores and expensive. Is there anything more than just the processing power to consider - any new features that are useful or might be in the future? Thanks for any help.

Skylake vs Broadwell - any new features?

The 5820K despite the 5xxx model number is Haswell-E rather than Broadwell. Technically that makes it 2 generations behind but it still seems to be a smarter choice than Skylake in my opinion. Particularly for the work that you do the extra cores will be of much more benefit than a slight increase in instructions per clock.
Went 5820K myself when I saw the Skylake reviews. The extra cores are of more use to my workflow anyway.

Thanks both, especially Phemo. I had for ages though that 4 == Haswell and 5 == Broadwell. Many formerly confusing conversations become clear.
Well I guess that the 5820K makes the most sense, then. Would be great to go up to the 8-core version but it's just way too much money. Will be an upgrade from an 8350 regardless.

I recently went with the 5820k after seeing Skylake reviews and the benchmark 8pack did with skylake. With the deal with the x99 OCUK were doing it was a no brainer.

Glad I went with i7 6700k. x99 platform while a little cheaper is "not" a gaming one and skylake beats most benchmarks I saw a few weeks back and it's also much cooler 25c idle with H105 and OC's like a boss! If your gaming Skylake is the better platform.

Definitely for professional use I'd get the 5820k. It is after all it's primary design.

Sorted. x99 it is then 
X99 is just fine for games and better if a game/ program can take advantage of the extra cores/threads or if you want to run three cards or more (I run two gpu's a pci-e ssd and an m.2 ssd of x99). Not so sure on your overclocking claim. It may run cooler with a merely adequate cooling solution due to its lower tdp but if you have a higher spec cooling solution that can remove the heat then you will benefit from a soldered ihs and larger chip surface area to dissipate the heat with x99 over yet another dodgy Tim solution under the ihs for good old skylake.

While your claim on x99 needing all 6 core for gaming is wrong. There not one game that even uses the extra cores. I not going to argue about which one is better. Don't get me wrong x99 is a great platform, but if I wanted enthusiast grade at this time I would wait for Skylake-E. Not x99
Skylake-E isn't arriving for another year at least. Long time to wait.

Some games already benefit... More will follow... Dx12 games will also take advantage of six cores when they start to show up.... X99 will therefore likely represent a better long term buy (more 'future proof' as some may say). Its very unlikely that the z170 refresh 'kabylake' will have a six core CPU. I'd put money on the top end i7 being yet another 4c 8t cpu with a minor improvement in ipc and a bump to the integrated graphics that few will care about with the same poor Tim under the ihs. Even by recent leaked intel roadmaps the earliest we will see skylake-e will be q3 2016 by which point we will almost certainly have had the z170 refresh as well

Skylake as is is not a Gaming platform, given that you can't use a Multi GPU setup at full capacity, or even use a single GPU and an PCIe SSD.

Well it is a gaming platform, it's just not the high-end gaming platform.
If you want really high-end (ie. 3 or 4 way SLI) then Skylake is not the way to go. Though to be fair I think Skylake has priced itself out of it for the most part anyway.

This is the real problem with i7 skylake, enthusiast pricing for the cpu but mainstream features - £330! 4790k's snapping at it heels for much less and 5820k's can be had quite a bit cheaper with little difference in price once a motherboard and memory is accounted for with the benefits of the x99 chipset
