I used skype a few times a few years ago to make international calls. I stopped using a while back because the other party always made complaints that the quality was poor and I kept getting cut mid conversation.

Now that I have fiber with 0 ping, 76Mbps down, 18Mbups up I was wondering whether it is worth giving a shot or if the service will be the same because the quality issues is from skypes side.

I've always found Skype/Facetime Audio etc. calls to surpass landline/mobile voice quality easily, so easily that it sometimes sounds a bit strange.

If you're having quality issues with Skype then I would suggest it's an issue with your setup somewhere rather than a problem with the service.

Whenever you mention a ping time you also need to state the destination. Where do you get 0 ping to? The person you're trying to call?

Quality issues are almost never from Skype's side, Skype's call processing is some of the best in the industry. Call quality is entirely dependant on your connections and the routing between you.

Skype is free, so it's most certainly worth giving it a shot. As above, Skype quality can be much more detailed than a landline even if your're using basic equipment which is properly set up.

FaceTime audio call quality is fantastic, always impressed by it.

Only really use Skype to phone international landlines, quality is often pretty weak but suspect that's line related rather than Skype.

Thanks. I'll retry again - I think the lowest plan is £1.80 for 60 minutes to landlines and mobiles.

I used to have issues with skype when I was with be ISP where the total uplink was 2mbps or 70-80KB/s sometimes I would have torrents running and if it was seeding close to the connection limit it would affect skype drastically.

I used Skype to call my family in Poland for a while and quality is mostly poor.
I did route tracing and problem is usually around half the way ( Netherlands / Belgium ).
No such problems on the landline.

the hardware at yours and the other end can make a difference, for example i've been using me laptop and it's built in microphone because my main pc is down for maintenance, me mate [who gets 40k dl speeds] noticed a marked improvement when i started using my corsair headphones and their microphone, and thats with atrocious line quality.

when i call my dad [who is on 30m fibre as am i] who also has a headset with a decent microphone the quality is fantastic, certainly better than landline or mobile by a large margin

Open command-prompt and ping bbc.co.uk

Where's not really talking about recording device sound issues. More talking about the "tincan" sound that you get when the connection isn't great. Like a buffering sort of sound. Headset is all good.

yeah I know what you mean, get that with my mate occasionally any time steam or itunes or something starts downloading in the background because that, skype and whatever game were playing just eats his bandwidth, but providing that doesnt happen call quality is generally very good. if its the line I cant imagine theres much you can do about it

I use Skype for business calls to Taiwan and the calls are always clear and of high quality. I do have a £100 headset though. And a 60mb internet connection.

I do use it wireless from my laptop to my router too, which gives no quality loss either.

P.S. Try Oovoo as an alternative to Skype if your getting problems via skype though.

So... you were saturating a very slow connection by seeding torrents and then wondering why you were getting connection issues with Skype? :p
