Hi,

I've recently been using Skype - specifcally the screenshare feature and audio via a microphone.

The quality of the audio bar according to Skype is poor and it is noticly "crackly". My headset, with mic, is plugged directly into my soundcard (Asus Xonar).

I have 152 Meg fibre optic internet via ethernet. A couple of the people I have been talking to said they were connected via wireless. Could this be the cause?

Does anyone have anything else I can try? Have several more Skype sessions coming up within the next few weeks and need to get this sorted.

Cheers

Could be anything between you and them. Congested ISPs, poor routing/peering arrangements, congested WiFi could all be a factor in adding latency/jitter and reducing bandwidth.

Generally, internet tests only test your connection to host servers, not with other peers.

Can you ping and traceroute to each other? That might be a good place to start an investigation.

When 'im in England or when i'm on skype to my mum in London the call quality is always crap.

Guess whats at fault... Yep 152mbits of Virgin Medias finest........

I'm not saying yours is the weak link but i would not be surprised if it is.

VM probably treat skype as P2P traffic...
