skype

I have a skype phone sitting here for when my sister can call me. She lives in Chicago and I bought the thing so that she could call me for free. Has she done the same? Nope. Stupid woman.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea tbh, most people have free minutes on their mobiles etc and I don't think that everybody leaves their machine on 24/7 yet.

Also the one friend that I do have on my skype contact's list (as opposed to about 10 on my MSN list) sounds clearer than on a mobile. And for some reason there's a delay which for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix (if this is at all possible) even though the guy's only in Sheffield!

hi thanks for the reply
i belive that you can call a skypein number from any regular phone(same price as a normal call) is that right?
i too would use my mobile but its pay as you go so its not cheap(i only really have it for emerencys)

You can buy a SkypeIn number for about 30 euros a year, I believe. As far as I know you can buy numbers in other countries, so if you have a number of friends in New York you could purchase a New York number through skype, then when they call you they only have to pay local rate. Leaving your PC on 24/7 shouldn't be a problem; you can purchase routers with built-in ports for VoIP phones nowadays. Skype isn't the cheapest VoIP providor out there (calls for the anti-skype brigade), but it certainly seems the simplest to get set up with :)

The only problem you are likely to come up against is the inability to call the emergency services over VoIP. If you're okay with using your mobile in that situation, it should be fine :)
