Don't know anything about the aspire one, but is it not debian based? so has apt-get, if it does then just do:
sudo apt-get install skype
Otherwise I don't know
Thanks for that much apreciated..a steep learning curve Linux
was also just looking in add and remove and it has Gnome listed can I switch to that instead of XFCE ?and would this be a good thing to do any loss of functions programs etc if I do ?
You might find gnome slightly more intuitive (arguabl), although XFCE runs faster. You wouldn't loose any functionality anyhow.
Keep in mind that you can install more than one desktop manager, at login you should have the option allowing you to choose with one you'd like to use for that session.
