Skyrim: In-game AA @ 4 samples=17FPS. Using FXAA PPI AA = 30FPS. Wow what a great tool!

I just had to mention FXAA Post Process Injector (PPI) in its own thread because Im so impressed with it. A tiny download (its a 124KB zip file) that delivers in SPADES

Apart from altering the look of the game (all adjustable on the fly) I just "discovered" that its AntiAliasing (AA) settings kick ASS.

With everything maxed out in the Skyrim launcher (everything on ULTRA) I was getting a still-playable 17-19 FPS on my system.

I then killed the in-game AA (set it to 0) and of course the FPS jumped to 30.

Well you all know what AA does and while the game ran fast distant objects and terrain had the dreaded sawtooth edges. So I enabled the AA settings in PPI and jumped back into the game (again this is done on the fly..you just ALT-TAB in and out of the game after adjusting PPI).

Whoa ....all sawtooth edges gone...smooth as silk....full-on AA....and best of all the FPS steady @ 30+ !!

Highly recommended. Set in-game AA to zero and fire up PPIs AA instead :) PCs being the different beasts they are - I guess this will have different results for different people but my experience has been awesome. Pin-sharp Skyrim with decent FPS. Massive respect out to some_dude (PPIs creator)

Grab it (installation takes seconds):

I'm going to give it a go, I run mine on ultra settings, 4xAA at 1920*1080. FPS is usually around 40-60 although at times it can be 20-30fps.

Forgot to add I'm using a Q6600, 4gb, gtx275

@ mithrandir - ye deffo check it out its great.

Actually you reminded me about something I should have mentioned. My original FPS of 17 will be very low compared to what others are getting - its because Im running Skyrim at 1050 X 5040 rez across three 20" displays.

Its not HD but the game still looks great so I can only imagine what you guys with HD displays (and above) are experiencing!

There are a few mods that do this, having trouble deciding what one to use tbh. None of them have mod manager support which puts me off slightly.

This one is a *tiny* installation - actually it does not even install into Windows (think of it as a kind of portable app).

You just download it, unzip it and drag 4 tiny files into the main Skyrim folder and thats it. From there you run a small .exe and youre up and running.

To get rid of it just delete those 4 files :)

@ silversurfer - Its a tiny download and you can check very quickly to see its effects as you can use it while the game is running and will see the results intantly :) Will be better for you rather than see screenshots. Also you will know very fast if its working well on your system. If not as I mentioned above its very quick and easy to remove.

Here is a FRAPS log of FPS while PPI AA is active: (Keep in mind this is at 1050 X 5040 rez so those of you on a single monitor will see even more massive FPS gains Im sure)

Frames----- Time (ms)---- Min---- Max---- Avg

Each his own I guess :p, this mod been posted a few times in the mod thread. Looking at the screenshots the colours are way too over saturated and just looks good awful to me, I prefer getting colours to being natural as possible, that is just a eye ache, imo anyway.

You can disable all visual effects and just keep the AA turned on.

Its very flexible. There are seven tabs and the ones I have enabled are in green. The rest are all turned off! Thats the great part about it - in your case you can turn everything off and just keep AA running etc :)

Yes it does. There's no point in implementing it using third party injectors.

FXAA Injector is OK but there are way better looking ones out there.

The issue I had was *severe* FPS drop when I enabled Skyrims own FXAA :(

For some reason 3rd party apps seem to work better for me but like I said all our systems behave differenty. And of course when it comes to how the game looks..that is a very individual thing :)

Im interested in seeing what else is out there to enhance the visual look of Skyrim!
