Hi,

I'm currently replaying Skyrim on legendary difficulty and I'm at level 10 but I've noticed enemies almost always attack my companion first. I don't remember it being like this last time I played this on default difficulty but then again I don't remember if I had a companion most of the time.

I definitely need a companion this time round though as it's ridiculously difficult without her as it makes the game for want of a better word..."awkward". As in I could be employing cheap tactics like using the terrain to my advantage whereby I can hit the enemy but the enemy can't hit me or one hit then leg it and then rinse repeat after healing.

The quest I've just done whereby I had to fetch the Fragment of Wuuthrad from Dustman's Cairn was hardly enjoyable. Just kept swinging my greatsword at the enemies who were focusing their efforts on Farkas.

The first time I completed this I was only level 14 and used a greatsword most of the time until the end of the game hit me by surprise. So my intention this time round is to explore more and do side quests and take the magician route rather than brute force with heavy armour and greatsword.

However it appears I'm still heavily dependent on the sword and armour and longbow as the magic is weak in comparison against this legendary difficulty.

In short, any tips/advice for a better experience in terms of a 50/50 split between companion and I when enemies engage and tips on magic as my fire, frost and shout are pretty much useless.

Also in the above mentioned level, some skeleton enemies would go down in say 6 hits of the greatsword and others would take like 50 before going down. Is this a glitch?! The two skeletons I'm on about...far from the difference between a mud crab and a dragon.

Thanks! :)

Hi,
In Skyrim, most monsters have a preset level range, IE from 10-20. The actual level is set when you enter their area for the first time. If you entered the skeleton's cave at lvl 10, they would be lvl 10. Later on, another cave has a similar 10-20 level range but you first entered it at 18 so the similar skeletons are much stronger. In your case, the cave you were in must've had two or more sections, each section with it's own level range with increased difficulty.

In order to handle the difficulty without much of a fuss, all you need to do is to focus on a specific skill tree. If you get 5 levels and put 5 points in swords, your sword damage is enough to handle the monsters (they increase in level at the same rate you do). However, if you put 1 point swords, 2 in different types of magic, 1 in armor and 1 in stealth or something, your damage will not be enough to handle the same monsters. In other words, being a jack of all trades in Skyrim is not a good idea at the top difficulty level.

im doing same at moment went in a cave last night and a vampire master ruined me :p i will go back for him when im a bit stronger and with better gear :D

Thanks Zethor and yes Dg I came across a vampire master in Riften and they have immense health/defense/attack lol.

Well I tried playing on and levelling up some and improved my heavy armour and greatsword. And then I returned to Swindler's Den where I had left Kematu and his group of men as I couldn't take them on initially. I went alone this time without Lydia as I wanted to guage a feel on how I would cope alone and also as mentioned above the annoying characteristic that enemies tend to engage the follower rather than me. So...I still got annihilated on Legendary mode but I took the oppportunity to reload and test the other difficulty levels of Expert and Master. I think for the sake of a more enjoyable and fluid game experience I'm going to start again and do Expert difficulty with no companion. :p
