Just bought this and never played an RPG before, and it feel like you have to do a 2 year college course to learn everything that the game offers i.e skills magic potions spells etc...

Do you learn things as the game goes along? How do all the skills work, how do you know how to mix up ingredients for potions?

Game just seems so deep that its going to take years and years to learn everything.

I just learnt as I went along. You will make mistakes, but nothing that will hurt you in the long run. You will find out very quickly which play style suits you best.

your first play through just do what you want you will learn what suits you best, no need to tworry about messing anything up and not knowing what to do cause when you do you second play you will know a whole lot more, just enjoy it !

One tip.. Dont play with the Giants at low level.. I learnt the hard way, over and over.. and over :p

This man is a HUGE liar. The only way to experience Norwegian Space Travel is by visiting a giant and attempting to engage him in a small bout of fisticuffs.

It's pretty hard to be bad at Skyrim on default difficulty, you could be a mage shooting a bow with heavy armour and you'd still be OK.

When choosing your character at the start each one has some specific skills. Its worth doing some research so that the character matches what skills you want to master in the game. I didn't know this until after.

Well we did play a game of baseball.. With me being the ball :p

All this does is gives you a bit of a head start on some skills or gives a few bonuses that can usually be applied with enchanted items. I'd say just go for the race that you like best or suits the character you want to make, because as you get further along in the game, the difference will be minimal.

it took me a while to learn how to play the game, but after 10 or so hours, it became obvious as most of the quest includes a bit of tutorial...

Stay away from Giants, but apart from that you'll be fine, just roam around, have a bit of fun, and if you get stuck or find glitches, Google is your friend.

It's relatively easy to pick up - even though it seems complicated at the moment.
