Guys I really would like some opinion and advice on what I should go with.

Just after some clarity on which Skyrim to actually look at. There is the newly updated Special Edition but I see a lot of negative press about this with links to the older 'hidden' version on steam. Is the older version more popular with mods? I.e would that be the better version and then to mod the game up, or go with the newer version?

If anyone can point out some key differences that would be great.

Thanks in advance!

their all terrible, :p but in seriousness i believe the new edition requires modders to do their mods again.

so the older version may have more mods available till they catch up. (not sure if they have already)

The older version has a lot more mods, SKSE support etc which is great for modders.

SSE looks better, and has more support in other areas hardware wise.

Edit: The difference is that SE is 64-bit and directx 11 while regular Skyrim is 32-bit and directx 9.

Which makes a huge difference when you have a lot of mods. I used to have a lot of issues with the game crashing, but since I've been modding the 64 bit version, no issues (Other than mods conflicting).

A lot of the crashing issues with the game are due to the physics simulation exploding (not sure if its an issue with the SE version) when you render much over 60 fps and the way a few other things run that is incorrectly linked to framerate.

Capped to 56 fps while using G-Sync (or FreeSync) and SKSE to better deal with memory limits I was able to increase uGrids to 9 and play without issues which massively increases the draw distance of high detail and makes the gameworld seem more alive.

I never finished the 'standard' version when it came out due to having some c2d errors, when they gave me the special edition for free I played all the way through that and the dlc and had 0 issues, mod support was limited at launch but most of the big ones worked fine and it didn't hamper my playthrough in the slightest.

If your picking a version up for the first time get SE.

I've been playing the Special Edition with the unofficial code patch mod installed and it is stable as a rock. Very highly recommended and of course the Special Edition comes with all the DLC included as well.

I'm sure that the Special Edition is the best long term purchase as all the mod authors will slowly transition over to making them for the Special Edition rather than the original one especially as owners of the original game with all the DLC got the Special Edition for free.
