I realise it's gonna make a tiny amount of difference, but after updating my iMAc to sl, is their anything I can check that it's running in 64bit.
And if not what to do?

Open up "About this Mac" then click more information.

Scroll down to the "Applications" subsection and it will tell you which applications are 64-bit.

Now, if you want a true 64bit kernel you have to press 6 and 4 on boot.

So if the programme is 64bit it's already running in this mode, is their any risk with anything booting the kernal into 64bit, would I realistically see much difference with big files in the likes of cs3?

The 64bit kernel is really about address space (have you got more than 4GB so the OS can cache 4GB..) and drivers. It also opens up some efficiency savings that return performance gains depending on the application. Chances are CS will not use those anyway.

The program itself can run 64bit and often it's just a recompile, the same large picture handling is used so it may not change the behaviour.

In short - you may see some increase but not that you'd notice unless you have more than 4GB.

You're confused. 64 bit apps work out of the box. My method simply shows you which apps are 64 bit.

If you want the benefits of the 64-bit kernel (which NickK described) then you need to press 6 and 4 on boot, although this is not needed to run the 64 bit apps. If that makes any sense?

No. Most native apps (Finder, Mail, Safari etc) are 64bit so you'll see a small speed boost anyway.

I run SL in 32bit kernel mode as SL doesn't support my MBP3,1 in 64bit. However I run apps and anything else in 64 bit - including the apps I write. So as EVH has indicated you're not loosing anything with just 4GB.
