TLDR; What's some good sites for tech news to replace slashdot?

I know theres a few people here who read slashdot, so you must be aware of the 'new' site design they are now using. Which sucks and blows simultaneously in all directions at once. It's now unusable on iphone and hard to read on a normal computer screen. Turning stylesheets doesn't even help, there's no way to see previous days easily etc. It was all thrashed out in a mega thread on slashdot itself. After reading it for more than 10 years now I can't even be bothered with half the stories and as for idle dont even go there.

Anyway.... I'm quitting it, I'll probably keep an eye on seenonslash as that harvests the best comments anyway. So alternatives to slashdot - what is good?

the register
hackaday
anything else?

It's not my favourite site either, but it's so wide-ranging there's no one single site that can replace it. Engadget for tech news, Inquirer and the Register for tech industry news, Ars Technica (and to a lesser degree BoingBoing) for politics and science stuff, and Wired for everything else.

They've been intent on ruining the design for years now. It used to be just barely usable in Internet Explorer (mandated browser at work) but I had a look yesterday and now it's not even remotely usable. IE was locking up left, right and centre. Ridiculous.

I know it's already been mentioned in the OP and twice since, but just another vote for The Register.

I find the range of articles really interesting and I end up reading about stuff I perhaps wouldn't normally as the writing is good. I reckon it actually has expanded my horizons... that sounds fairly twee but nevermind!

Lifehacker
Gizmodo
Engadget
Ars Technica
Wired

Those are the varied tech style places I read often.

lol did someone use the word 'good' and 'The Register' in the same sentence? It's about as newsworthy as The Sun.

Why?

Also, Engadget and Geekologie.

Why? I don't really want to go into too much detail but I've seen so many inaccuracies and things taken out of context on that site over the years both involving projects where I have had access to actual figures of and ones that friends have been involved in. They are very clever in that they seem to make up figures which a company wouldn't want to rebuff because the actual figures are commercially sensitive.

They also seem to be VERY biased towards companies that advertise/have advertised on their site, surprise surprise.

Seriously, enjoy it in the same way you wold enjoy reading The Sun but take everything you read there with a pinch of salt.

I find that is true with the majority of media outlets :)

Also, I enjoy BOFH.

Aye, I enjoy reading it (The Reg) as the articles are generally articulate and engaging. A lot of it goes over my head to be honest, but I've found that it's made me take more of an interest in topics that I might've blanked in the past e.g. miltary hardware, space-related stuff and other things.

I appreciate your personal perspective on inaccuracy though.

The Register and the Inquirer often get slated for being inaccurate but the number of times they got accurate scoops which turned out to be right is amazing.
You want trashy? Read the Gawker sites! :p
