Hi, regarding my earlier topic http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17621221 , it was due to me not inserting the IDE cable in enough  anyway, it attempts to boot now, but it comes up with somethingh like
'sorry for inconvenience, but windows encountered an unexpected problem...
etc. etc. etc.
Try starting from Safe mode
svemode mode from network
run windows when had last best configurations
run windows normally'
so, i trried all these, and they all just restart pc and go to the same ^ options again.
I know the harddrive is ok, cos im using it now in old pc, its like it doesnt ackowledge with my new comp. So, i have a new IDE HDD, and a dvd rom,
so i was thinking of setting HDD up as Master an dvd rom as Slave. so i could instsall windows fresh from a cd a friend kindly lent me. However, although my IDE ata 133 HDD is listed in BIOS, my DVD rom isnt. yet i had it attached to ata lead as slave. I heard something abou..'jumpers/jump leads'?
what are they, and do i need them, or should it just be ide slot HDD master, DVD rom Slave (on same lead)?
pleeease help, im getting so close, i can almost smell HL2 and Q4!
thanks

ok, both devices will have jumpers for master and slave and cable select,
if you are setting the hard drive as master it MUST BE ON THE LAST CONNECTER ON THE CABLE and the slave device needs to be in the middle.
if you are using CS (cable select) then it will set the device on the end to master and the middle to slave. make sure you have this correctly.

Sorry, forgive me being stupid, what are the actual jumper? is it the long wide lead with the three broad 39-pin connections? one end, middle, and other end, is that the jumper?
also, i have set as thus (MIS have labeled the 3 connector lead)
MSI MAIN: IDE on mobo, MSI SLAVE(middle): DVD-burner and MSI MASTER:HDD but my pc doesnt seem to recognise the slave(DVD) in BIOS

You can't just swap a hard drive between rigs and expect it to work normally. Put it back in the old PC and uninstall the chipset drivers and any onboard devices on the old mobo (sound/lan/etc). Then try it again in the new rig. You may have to do a fresh XP install, and XP might ask to be re-activated.

Ok, what i was thinking then, is setting it up so my new HDD is master, slave is DVD-burner. And i would like to know, if i can get bios to recognise the dvd/slave. then i could use my XP disc to instal XP into my new HDD/Master.

Look on the back of your cd/dvd drive, jumpers look like this :

ohhhh, is it the one in middle? with 8 pins, to of them have like a thick piece of plastic on them?
i thought jumpers were the 39-pin long leads that have master and slave that plug into IDE on mobo. will i NEED to plug the 8-pin jump leads into HDD and DVD as well as the big 39-pin lead?
plz, i think i'm sorta understanding now...

The thick pieces of plasic as you call it are the jumpers... you move them to the appropriate pins on the back of the device !!!
If you look on the back of your drives it will be marked :MA=Master, SL=Slave and CS=Cable Select.
Move the jumper on the back of the HDD to MA, and the jumper on the back of the dvd to SL.....

but make sure that the master device is on the end of the cable and slave is in the middle.

ack! I cant have them cables. i only have a real thick cable. You know IDE cable. I'm in a pickle as I dont have those 2 2-pin small jump cables unfortunately. when i opened my old pc, to put new components in, i have a big thick 39-pin cable with thre male connections that went in IDE2 which had DVD-burner master, and DVD-ROM slave. Where can I buy Jump cables?
Also, I just heard that having a HDD and DVD-burner on one cable makes a conflict?

NO no, you've got it wrong, there are NO jumper cables. That little piece of black plastic is the jumper.

You only need the ribbon cable and the power supply connected to your drive.

EDIT\
This picture shows the pin layout and how jumpers change the setting.

The position of the drives on the cable only matters when you use "cable select". If a drive is set as "master", it doesn't matter where on the cable you connect it.

phew, so, is the 39-pin ribbon cable THE lead i just use? in the 39-pin long socket at back of HDD and DVD-rom? It's just the picture in post look like 2 arrows pointing at one 8-pin socket. so i DONT put anything in that 8-pin socket? just ignore it? just use the 39-pin ribbon cable? also, is it true i may not be able to use a HDD+DVD-burner on same cable? thanks
sorry for testing you guys patience

You should be able to use both HD and DVD on the one cable, just make sure the DVD jumper is set as "slave".

You should see a diagram on the bottom of the drive (like the image in my last post) which shows you where to put the plastic jumper, so that the PC treats it as a slave.

In this picture, placing the jumper over the left 2 pins means "MASTER" (first option), and removing the jumper completely sets it as "SLAVE" (second option):

Look for the diagram on your DVD drive and set the jumper to whatever the "slave" position is.
Does that make sense?

It varies from model to model, so you have to look for a label on your drive which tells you how to set 'master', 'slave', or 'cable select' (M, S, CS), or it could be stamped in the metal casing, close to the jumper. I'm fairly sure your HD is already on master, so just set DVD to slave.
