I've tried using the sleep function in Windows 7 but it actually takes about 5 seconds longer to get to the desktop than a normal power on does.

I've set the S3 option in my bios but the computer still goes through the POST, then I get a black screen, then it says windows is resuming.

I think it's loading the last saved state from the hard drive and not taking it from ram but I don't really know.

My mobo is a DFI Infinity 975x/g if that helps.

Any ideas what I could do to speed it up?

it sounds like its going into standby rather than sleep. I have mine set to go into standby and it does exactly the same thing you described (POST, windows is resuming, desktop)

I can't remember of fhand but isnt it S5 you need to set for sleep rather than S3?

I think it might be S1 I need now but I generally take what Wikipedia says with a pinch of salt.

I'll try it later tonight when I get home.
