Considering going to London on an overnight train but wondered what they were like, are they shared cabins with strangers?

Do they stop somewhere during the journey? As it shows it takes about 9 hours from where I am.

hmm I suspect this

Surely that is station to middle point station that then doesnt run again until first thing in the morning, then runs on to london. So you will probably need a hotel to stay in for the night :p

It shouldnt take anywhere near 9 hours for a journey to london :p

Hmm, I hadn't considered that.

Appears the route I'm after (Lancaster to London Liverpool Street) isn't a sleeper, it just terminates at a station like Morba says.

I use sleeper trains a couple of times a year, my partner's parents live in Inverness.

It's a fantastic service, get on the train in London in the evening, wake up in Inverness the following morning in time for breakfast. By far the best way to get up there.

Standard class is two beds (good size, very comfy) to a cabin (with sink), 1st class is the the same kind of cabin, but with one of the beds strapped up, so you're on your own.

I also went to Italy last year, Bristol - London - Paris - Verona (via sleeper) - onwards into Alps. Left Bristol after lunch, arrived in Italy in time for lunch. Seriously, best way to travel.

I can't find it anymore, but Dom Joly used to do articles for newspapers, I think it was The Times. As part of it, he would also do a recorded podcast, this was back when podcasting had just come to the forefront.

He did one where he travelled on the Scot Rail Sleeper and it was hilarious. Before he got on, he thought it would be like the Orient Express, but found out that wasn't the case. Highly amusing.

As clv101 says, really. Its worth bearing in mind that a single person travelling alone in Standard Class may end up sharing a cabin with a stranger on the Scotrail sleeper services. First Class doesn't have this issue.

It is, however, designed for travel between London and Scotland so the timings are very inconvenient for Cumbria. Infact I'm not even sure they'll sell you a berth to get off there. Edit: You can have a Berth from Carlisle but it leaves at 01:40!

The train fares sites won't give me the option of the sleeper even though we are on the Caledonian Sleeper route :(

Any other cheap ways of getting to London? Megabus?

I have only ever been on one, from Moscow to St Petersburg. The train itself was horrid, not sure if that's due to the fact it was Russian or not.

Also someone stole my egg:(
