Slept on my shoulder

I have had a similar sort of things a few times. I have woken up and my arm is seriously dead, cold and I am unable to move it at all. It's really scary. It happens when I sleep on my side with my arm upwards ( perhaps under the pillow ) like I am resting my head in my hand. Since then I have learnt to always place my arm down when I go to sleep.
 
My father had this issue, he was in a long surgery and the doctors didn't support his arm correctly. He woke up and was unable to use his arm for a day or two.
He regained mobility in it but it never returned to normal.
