It will work, but there's no point in SLI'ing with a 1GB card, as you'll only be able to use 768MB of it. Get a cheaper 768MB version instead to match what you already have.
I have an nvidia 460 768MB version, is it still possible to SLI it along with a 1GB version? Tried looking around the nvidia site but couldn't find the list of compatible GPUs which could SLI together.
Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?
No. For example, an XXXGT 512MB cannot be paired with a XXXGT 1GB in an SLI configuration.
the current 460 i have is the gigabyte super oc which i cant seem to find anymore.
There is no point to SLI a pair of 1GB cards any more.
There is no point to SLI a pair of 1GB cards any more, why bother SLI a 1GB card with a 768MB card, if it works at all, making vram a more serious bottleneck there? I'd say wait for 28nm for a proper vram size.
Based on this. What do you base this on? It's simply untrue. At 1080p 1GB vRAM is plenty.
No.Do you own a factory producing VRAM chips?
Based on this.

Those will still work perfectly OK with 1GB of VRAM.
I don't think that thread reflects the reality of actually playing the games though. I've played all the way through Metro 2033 at 1080p with everything on full except 'advanced physics', and 'advanced depth of field' with no framerate problems whatsoever. Whether the numbers say the game uses more than 1GB of vRAM or not, it doesn't seem to affect playability.
just kidding). To be honest I'd like to have that trait to avoid upgrading my 5870 1GB x 2 CF.
@ harmony
That's all very nice and shows that in some circumstances it seems that having more than 1GB of VRAM is better than only having 1GB.
No one said it wasn't.
But those games are still perfectly playable with 1GB and that's all that matters to most people.
