Sli 470s and Zalman 3000f coolers

Hi guys
I've got two asus gtx470s running on an asus rampage 3 extreme motherboard.
I never over clock them and sadly had one of the cards go down recently.

After scouting about everywhere for a new asus gtx470 tho Ive managed to get one and thought I'd put some aftermarket coolers on.

As such I ordered two Zalman 3000F coolers.

I'm now worrying about if they will actually fit tho in sli ?

I use slots 1 and 3 but I gather they are a 3 slot cooler ?

Could I i use slots 1 and 4 on the board possibly ?
Or is there another type of cooler I could use for sli ?

I can't afford and dont want to use water blocks, but I want to ensure the cards run cool and last.

having looked again im not sure =o(

the psu looks a tad close

anyone fitted gtx470s with zalman 3000f coolers, in SLi ?
ill have to wait for them to arrive i guess

I have no experience of fitting an aftermarket cooler but they look like dual slots to me.

My first thought would be that the zalman's will dump all the heat into your case and not exhaust out the back like the stock asus versions. No biggie providing your case has plenty of airflow.

Am not on Sli but have an asus 470 to which I added the zalman - 3 slots gone:( (i.e graphic slot itself + 2 below)

Could fit a second card but gap between Zalman cooler and top of 2nd card would be small !!

Motherboard is Msi P67A-GD65

Cannot see small gap aiding cooling but it might not be as bad as it looks :) I've read of others running sli with very little gaps between cards without too much problem.

Would def. agree with vector's comment ref. good air flow needed.

Running reference cooled 470's here in sli, good airflow is a must, decent slot spacing helps as well, cant comment about aftermarket coolers as they would render sli impossible on my board if both had aftermarket coolers fitted.

They top out at 76-73c in game, custom fan profile but ive also added a spotcool behind to help with cooling.

Prior to adding it my top card ran 10c higher than the bottom one at idle and load, (normal in sli), theyre much closer now. Could get them even closer again once i give them a bit of a clean out. Noise isnt an issue with the spotcool either.

Thanks for the information :)- will def. be looking to include the spot fan if I ever decide to go sli/crossfire.

Gave my cards a good clean out with a brush and compressed air, (cleaned whole rig as well), max temps in game, 69-65c, nice little drop from 76-73c, keeps the fan profile from kicking in to loud as well.

The coolers arrived today
The 2nd 470 should be here by Friday

But I'll be fitting the first card with the Zalman cooler tonight.
With that card I'll soon know either way if they will fit

Fit lovely ;)
Was worrying needlessly
Little snug on the second card, but big enough gap to vent comfortably
Well chuffed

Coolers are tricky things to do tho (well the first one was) lol
