Seeing the thread with some really good clocking 7600s and some cracking bench scores im wondering if its worth getting a couple and SLI ing them up. Im guessing i could get the £150 for one of the cards from flogging my 7800GT. Then ive got £200 coming next week which would allow me to get the 2nd one.

im debating whether to do the same thing, or whether to use two X1600XTs in crossfire, since i already have one, and its smashing overclocker, i would do crossfire without a second thought it ATI get some better drivers out for these cards, there hardware wise identical pretty much to 7600GT, only difference is the X1600s have the 256-Bit ringbus which supposidly lets them utilize available memory bandwidth more efficiently, however there performance (at the moment) leaves much to be desired, but i think getting yourself two 7600s and SLI-ing them would give quite a large boost from 7800GT, with the added benefit of them being cheaper than 7800s, its a bargain if i ever saw one

For Meatloaf,

Get yourself a second 7800gt. It does'nt make sense to go sli with two lower cards when you already have one 7800gt. If you look around though there is a competitor expecting stock of XFX 7900gt's for £199 delivered. Maybe OCUK could match that.

For Gashman,

The X1600XT's are nowhere near as powerful as a 7600gt so the move to one of those for you would be a good one. The only thing is you have a Crossfire board so you maybe better off with something like a X800GTO which has similar performance to the 7600gt. Not sure if they are crossfire compatiable though.

i don't have crossfire board, i have nforce4 ultra board, and to be honest im ultra tempted to go for twin XFX 7600GT XXX editions in SLI on DFI lanparty SLI-DR expert board, should run through most games without a hiccup, the only thing i wonder is what sort of PSU is needed for 7600GT SLI, since there quite low power cards?

Don't know how i thought you had a Crossfire mobo.

I got this from BFG's website about power requirements for Sli'd 7600gt's:-

NOTE: For two GeForce 7600 GT-based graphics cards running in NVIDIA SLIconfigurations, a minimum 450W system power supply (with 12V rating of 28A) is recommended. Visit www.slizone.com for more information.

That is also what it says for a pair of 7800gt's though.

surely the price of 2 7600GTs would get you 1 7900gtx and hammer the living daylights out of the sli'ed 7600s??

You would think so would'nt you? It is close though as you can see here . The Sli'd 7600gt's seem to be ok until you get to 1600x1200 with lots of AA/AF and then they start to struggle.

2x 7600gt's are also considerably cheaper than a single 7900gtx. They come in around £280 for the pair whereas the cheapest 7900gtx on OCUK is £381.82 and none of those are in stock anyway.

Going with the pair of 7600gt's will screw up any future upgrade though and means you would have to replace both cards again instead of just buying an additional top spec card.

it would screw up any future upgrade and more to the point why would you bother with sli for a 17" tft? 1600x1200 and upwards is the domain of sli and crossfire and ultra high end cards, thats what they're for. The fact you could/can sli 6600s/7600s etc is just a gimmick imho.

quite apart from anything yes you might be able to give yourself a boost in a years time when its feeling the strain but for about the same price you'll be able to get next years product.

If I wasn't running 1920x1200 I wouldn't have sli or even dream of having sli.. period.. after all, double the cards=double the potential faults, double the depreciation, double the cost of cooling, double the noise etc etc etc.

i will also be intending to overclock both 7600s when i get my watercooling gear, making each one proberbly a fair bit faster than stock, so i think its worth it to be honest, but thats just me

TBH I don't see anypoint in going from a 7800GT to 2x 7600GT's in SLI, epscially if you can get another 7800GT for a lot less than the £200 budget you have. The 7800's at stock perform as well as the the 7600GT heavily OC'd so if you OC your 7800's then you are gonna have much better performance especially in high resolutions with AA & AFdue the the 256bit memory bus.

how do gainward BLISS 6800GS 'goes like hell' editions compare to most 7600 and 7800s, is there much between them? not to forget those 6800GS' clock a fair bit higher than there stock speed

(edit...you can pick up BLISS 512mb 6800GS for £145.99)
