SLI and multiple monitors?

Having upgraded to a nice shiny Abit IN9 nForce 680 board, I've been thinking about making use of all 3 PCI-E slots, 2 to drive my 8800GTS cards in SLI and the third for a cheap and cheerful card to drive a second monitor. However, having just tried this with a crummy old 7100GS, Vista (Business x64) goes into an endless loop of bluescreens, saying driver_irql_not_less_or_equal or something like that.

So, a solution? A quick search reveals that using a non-nVidia card for the second monitor works, but I don't have a PCI-E ATI card handy. There's also suggestion that it doesn't work at all in Vista... does anyone here have a similar setup, or any suggestions as to how I can make it work?

Do you still have to reboot when enabling and disabling SLI? Also, I think you're best either keeping the cards within the same family, ie 8 series, or a completely different brand like an el-cheapo PCI-E ATi Card.

No reboot needed, but it's a bit of a pain having to set up the monitor configuration every time. Ideally though I'd like to be playing a game on the primary monitor and displaying other stuff on the second at the same time.
