so turn on vsync with in the game and get 60 frame rate but turn it off I get over 100 frame rate but how does one stop the tearing of the screen then with vsync off ?

You can't really, if the framerate of the game hovers around the refresh rate of your monitor you're going to get tearing. Changing settings so that the average is either quite a bit higher or lower than your refresh rate would minimise it.

You shouldnt get tearing at 100 fps on a 60hz monitor, the frame rate must be dipping.

thanks for the reply

when you mean by "dipping" do ya mean a sharp decrease in fps, like going from 120 to 75. An example would be appreciated

No point in having more FPS than your monitor can display. If its pegged at 60fps with VSync on then leave it on.

Erm I noticed tearing on my monitor, vsync helped but the problem with mine was that I connected it using a vga to vga. Bought a dvi to dvi from belkin and problem fixed no more tearing. So it depends also what connectivity you have

I think its the monitors fault since it can only do 60hz. I think ill start a thread in the monitors forum asking for some advice on a 120hz monitor

thanks lads for the help.
