SLI compatilbility question

Hi to all,

Quick question........I have a rig that i wanna eek a bit more power from. I currently have a Gainward GTX295 single board version installed and was thinking of just adding a second GTX295 card for SLI. My PC is fully specified for SLI. My question is this..........I know have have to buy another GTX295 single board version, but do i have to get an exact one. ie: The card i currently have is a Gainward GTX295 single board version, do i have to get another Gainward or can i get an XFX, BFG, EVGA GTX295 single board?

any will do as long as the memory is the same.


The 295 is already a sli card btw. adding another will make it Quad.

For the record. I'm currently using a 55nm GTX260 216SP along with a 65nm GTX260 216SP. SLI works fine

Mmmm interesting....... i was wondering if i could use the dual board version of the GTX 295 instead of the single board version like i currently have. The dual board versions seem to be a lot more common to buy 2nd hand.

Does anyone know if i can mix a single board GTX 295 with a dual board GTX 295 for quad SLI????

Quad SLI does not scale as well as going from single GPU to Dual. IMO you should just upgrade to a more modern single GPU card. It will save a lot of power, and give you access to DX11.

+1. Lots of reported problems with quad SLI, maybe a second hand GTX480 would be better.

Must admit i had a 295 and sold it on the bay about 8 months ago for a 580. The difference in noise and heat is staggering. Oh and performance The 295 was a awesome card in its day.

I was pondering wether to just ditch my GTX 295 and start fresh, but at the mo cost is a factor. I figure to get a current decent card i'll have to spend at least £300. My initial thought was this.......i was thinking about ticking along with what i've got and just add another 2nd hand 295 for about £100, until DX12 and DX12 cards appear which i assume will be this/next year??? Then make the most of the new technology from the start.
I'm a little out of touch with the PC/modding scene at the mo, so please enlighten me if my assumptions are incorrect.

Hi again all.

After a bit of consideration and research, i think i'm gonna go for a new card and start fresh. A second hand GTX 295 will probably cost between £100 and £150, so i think i'd be better off say, spending £300 on a new DX11 card.
I thinking now about getting a 2.5GB EVGA GTX 570???? Will be about £300.

The options i'm considering are:

GTX 480
GTX 570 2.5GB
GTX 570 1.2GB

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice about which above card i should get?? I'm looking to play BF3 and other games at my monitors native res with all bells and whistles maxxed out.

The only thing that would bother me about spending £300 on a 570, is that for £40-£50 more you get into the 580 range.

As you said above. I'd be tempted to wait for the new cards to release
