SLI GFX Card compatability

How do you know if different cards are compatible for sli, i always thought it was just the gpu that had to be the same but i am obviously wrong as ive got a 6800 and 6800xt, they dont work.

When i buy another 6800 how do i know it will work with or the other?

6800 and 6800XT are not the same core though.

By same core that means they both need to have the same number of pixel pipelines and number of vertex shaders.

The cards also need to have the same type and amount of RAM.

Note: NVIDIA recommends that SLI customers, whenever possible, purchase graphics cards with matching memory sizes. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using Coolbits (value set to 18), the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes.
