I have 2 x 270's on a gigabyte x58-udr3 board, the cards are in slots 1 & 2 (16,16), I've added a spare 8800GT card in the bottom slot (8x), obviously this isnt in SLI but is being used as a dedicated physx card. because its not in SLI does it still lower all 3 cards down to 8x like it would if they were all in SLI.

The 8x restriction is unrelated to SLI, the motherboard doesn't have enough physical data lanes back to the CPU to run all 3 slots at 16x so you either get 2x 16 if you only have 2 devices of any kind connected and as soon as any device occupies the 3rd slot it drops down to x8 per slot.

Aslong as its working at PCI-e 2.0 spec x8 is plenty of bandwidth for 200 series nVidia cards or lower.
