SLI Question... GTX480 and GTX690?

This is probably a daft question to most in this forum but I'm new to SLIing so here goes.

I'm in the middle of getting all the bits to upgrade my pc, one of these components is the GTX690, my current set up already has a GTX480. I wasn't initially intending to SLI but since I already have the GTX480 my question is can the two be put together or does it need to be two or more of the same model card?

It needs to be the same model. Do you really need the 690? I have a 480 and max pretty much everything out.

Ok thanks for the quick answers.

As for the 690, after this upgrade I don't plan on doing another for quite some time so I want to almost future proof it (yes I know that is impossible where computers are concerned but you know what I mean)
It will also help greatly with my work as well.

This might be utter tripe, but didn't some guy combine two different models and do SLI?
I remember it being posted a while back, some American guy :L

Yeah there's a hack for it although not sure how successful a 4 series and 6 series would be.

@OP - you do realise a 690 IS still SLI right?

U cud always use the 480 as a dedicated PhysX card

He could, but not many games use PhysX to warrant such a power hungry and warm card. Plus, it has been shown that it sometimes causes a decrease in performance over using the main GPU.

Love coolermaster PSU's. Had two and both been great. Although i'm now using a Seasonic with my newish build which is brilliant too.

You can fetch quite a bit of cash for the 480 still, I got one of the B grade from OC and touch wood its been perfect thus far. I'd take it off you and pair with mine but I got the Gene Z mobo.

Isn't that the case only if the dedicated PhysX card is too weak to do the job? I doubt the 480 will be too weak!
