Hi,got a gainward 7900gt 512mb card atm,stock speeds are the same as several of the 7950s floating around.Question is,is it worth trying sli with a 512mb 7950 or wait for 8800 prices to drop? (aint gonna bother with vista/dx10 until someone holds a gun to my head)

Sorry but you can't. It has to be the same core, ie, 7900GT+7900GT or 7950GT+7950GT. You can mix and match the memory and clockspeeds but not cores.
