SLI Stuttering below 60fps

Thanks so much to everyone for their input. Unfortunately, a G-Sync monitor just isn't an option for me, as I like to carry my PC into the living room and connect it to my 55" plasma TV so that I can sit on the sofa and game in comfort!

Thankfully I can still run even the latest games such as FC4 and AC Unity at max settings (albeit it at 1080p) at 60fps 90% of the time with only the occasional dip below. I'm still not totally convinced that it's just me being sensitive - it seems SO obvious to me when the framerate drops below 60fps, I don't even need to look at fraps.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I can tell the difference between 59 and 60 without Fraps.

I know it may be hard to believe but I honestly think you're just sensitive to it like I am. On a 60hz monitor anything that isn't 30 or 60 will judder horribly due to the fact that some frames are displayed for longer than others. At 30fps every frame stays on screen for 2 refreshes consistently which looks perfectly smooth.

Have you never wondered why consoles lock to 30 and not 40 or 38 etc? It's because it will judder. If I can't hit 60fps 95% of the time, I lock to 30 because I can't stand judder and I sure as hell can't stand tearing. This is why G-Sync was created and rejoiced by PC gamers. A g-sync monitor changes it's refresh rate dynamically to match what the GPU is outputting. I will be buying a Free-Sync monitor the second they become available because being able to play at 40 or 45fps is a dream come true. Especially when the games releasing today need outlandish power to hit 60fps.
