SLI with different amount of vRAM?

I've currently got a GTX550ti 1GB, and have been looking for another to SLI it. I've found one which has 2GB.
The nVidia site says it won't work, but a few bits I've found online indicate it should 'downgrade' the 2GB card to match and work fine.
Any thoughts? :confused:

Going SLI is probably the cheapest I can do at the moment. These cards have sold for £40-£70, so if got one for £50, it'll increase my performance buy 60-80% at a guess.
Unless you can suggest a better second hand card for around £100 that'll give me that increase? (That's if I can get £50 for mine).
