Basically, since ive had this PC, Its been giving me little problems everywhere. Now they are just escalating whenever I try to solve anything, so I come here for help :)

I have this motherboard, Asus M4A89GTD PRO AMD 890GX. http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-392-AS

In the manual it says have the GPU in the lower Blue slot, and keep the VGA switch card in the upper slot to keep it running at 16x instead of 8x.

This thing,

Had those two in a month or two, all has been well, Just last week I bought Asus Xonar DS 7.1 PCI Sound Card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-006-AS&groupid=701&catid=11&subcat=

First of all I tried putting my 460 in the top PCIe slot and the VGA switch in the lower one as the soundcard is about a millimeter away from the card if left in the bottom slot. If I do this though, My monitor gets no signal, But I removed the VGA switch card, I get a signal but the card is only running at 8x.
So I left it as the manual says, GFX in the top, VGA switch in the bottom, sound card in the one of the PCI slots, No signal again.

Now out of the blue I get a new problem, because there was no signal, as it proved to work the last time, removed the VGA switch and booted up, only this time I was greeted by a bios screen, saying my current CPU does not support the core unlocker or something, Id never seen this screen before, I restarted, then the regular bios screen that pops up each time I noticed a change, its says only 3 cores active instead of 4, I go into CPU-Z and again, only 3 cores all of a sudden.

My CPU is a AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 555 3.20GHz Black Edition, if it makes a difference.

Sooooo erm..Help? What have I done to make a core disappear and what do I need to do to make my 460 use the correct speed in the PCIe slot?

Any help appreciated.

Well....after some faffing about in the Bios..which I really shouldnt be doing, as ill likely break something else, Ive got my 4th core back.

But the initial problem still remains, need some sort of configuration betweeen my graphics card, soundcard and vga switch thingy so my 460 actually runs at 16x int he 16x slot..

So you can boot into the bios, and there is a setting there (in Advanced settings) to boot from PCIex rather than the onboard GPU. My understanding is that the VGA card has to go in the white slot for your graphics card to run at 16x. I know the mobo has a a switch to switch between 3 and 4 cores it may be you selected this by accident.

Sorry, Still having problems with this. But just to clarify.

The gray PCIe slot, at the top, Is labelled PCIe 2.0 x16_1
and the blue, the lower one, Is labelled PCIe 2.0 x16_2

This is word for word what my manual says to do with the actual VGA and the VGA switch.

"The Asus VGA switch card allows the Blue PCIe_x16 slot to run at full x16 mode when only one graphics card is installed to the slot.

When you install only one graphics card, ensure to install the VGA switch card to the PCIe x16_1 slot first and the graphics card on the Blue PCIe x16 slot."

I have that done, VGA switch in the top, GFX in the bottom like its meant to, and it works fine, correct speed. I add my soundcard into the bottom PCI slot, and for some reason I get no signal. But if I remove the VGA switch and leave my graphics card in the lower slot and soundcard in the bottom slot, I do get a signal, only its running at 8x.

So for some reason, adding a soundcard causes the VGA switch to not work.

I dont think the load order as stated above is wrong, it matches whats in the manual, and it works fine either when there is no soundcard (fully at 16x), or when there is a soundcard but no VGA switch (but at 8x)

Could anything else be at fault?

I assume you have got your bios set as I have a PnP operating system to let windows set the IRQ's - if not set it this way. If you have then try assigning an IRQ to your Graphics card to stop the soundcard bumping it. Also I assume you have got any on-board graphics switched off.
