I fitted a thermalright shaman and vrm G2 to my gtx 480 in a bid to quieten it down a bit
and also to get it a bit cooler, temperatures with the stock cooler got to around 80c when playing bc2 for a while, fan is extremely noisy though

now with the shaman fitted my gpu temps are going up to 97c

I have tried with the supplied fan and also a gelid wing 140mm fan which has a higher cfm

I have also tried a few various methods of applying the thermal paste. grain of rice size blob in centre, spreading with the supplied tool, both using the cool factor 3 thermal paste

and still get the same high temperatures after a few mins 97c :(

not sure what I am doing wrong, maybe I should buy some mx3 paste

this is in a silverstone ft02 case, so case cooling should be ok

I am really fed up with this card wish I'd never got it now, I have also had to slow down its mem to stop it artifacting in games

Are you sure you've fitted the cooler correctly.

It sounds like you've fitted it more than once.

Does it look like it's making proper contact with the GPU when you've taken it off?

Shaman should be well capable of cooling a 480 especially with the vrm cooler. Are you running the fan at slow speed or something? It's an unfair comparison but it cools me 6950 superbly even at stupid slow fan speeds.

You did take the plastic film off the cooler, right?

Practically every review puts the Shaman against the 480 so if you are not getting consistent results to these then something is wrong with your installation or something

Had another look today, took off the cooler again and noticed the paste looked as though pressure was only being applied to the side near the pcie slot, also the cooler is not getting hot to the touch, even though card says 97c, had a good look and thought id cracked it, I noticed the main body of the cooler was touching the screws of the vrm cooler

adjusted the cooler (carefully eased it up a bit) and reapplied it

no luck though, gpu is still getting stupidly hot, and the cooler heatpipes are not really warm to the touch, somethings defo wrong with it, but I'm not sure what (ofc I took off plastic film)

I cant really tighten the screws any more as the card is starting to bend

I know the shaman is good, this one used to be, temperature used to max out at about 55-60c on this card, I am not sure what has changed

not sure what to do now, stock cooler is far to noisy, my shaman doesn't work on this peticular card, and I dont really want to invest any more money in this card, although it looks like I am going to have to

Think I have found my problem, the base of the shaman is very uneven, This is I presume what is causing my poor temps when using it

although It looks from the install guide you have to have to put thermal paste
on the gpu and on the bottom of the cooler before you install it

the last few times I have tried I have only put a very thin even coat on the gpu
or I tried with a small blob, but it didn't get spread

maybe the first time I installed the cooler I installed it the way thermalright suggested (cant remember) but the temps where better the first time I used it
just doesn't seem right using that amount of paste :)

I reckon I might have a go at lapping it, not sure yet though, It would be the first time I have tried it

I applied paste to both as per instructions and my temps are fine even at low speed.

Maybe the heatsink plate due to it's size doesn't touch the core directly? Seems a bit odd though. Mine is on super tight and looks a little tilted but works fine.

Yeh I got some mx3 today, so I'm going to give it another go at the weekend, applying paste to both surfaces first, If its still the same then I might have a go at lapping it, this stock gpu coolers doing me head in :0 loudest thing in my case by far

found the problem, somehow my gpu core has developed a hollow right in the middle
(concave)

Tried a different cooler on it (gelid icy vision) and it leaves the same pattern Ie all the paste has been compressed round the edges and is hardly being touched in the centre, where it matters, It also reaches 97c aswell with the gelid on

I should have took a picture really, its that bad

the base of the shaman is actually a little convex, so I spose that is actually helping a little, them mating with each other oO

I guess my only option would be to lap the gpu core, this really has been the worst card I have ever had, shame as its very good performance wise

Could you not replace the original cooler, making sure the temperatures are still very high, and then RMA the card?

Already been sent back once as working ok. And I had to remove a bit of rubber on back of card to fit the shaman. I don't think ocuk will take kindly to that, it would be another £15-20 down the drain

Isn't the FT-02 better suited to rear-exhaust coolers? I have got one and it says that on the manual.

Yes this is the main reason I got this card, the cooler is very effective in this case. Works better than the shaman does in fact, just it's so damn noisy :(

Don't lap the GPU core. That's bound to end in tears

To be honest I'm almost past caring. Might just try it anyway. The amount of times I've had it in and out of my case. I'm amazed it still works tbh

lol, no I posted something... and think it wasn't appropriate so ignore my post. I wasn't say ignore your post! lol.

Incidently.. reckon you just need to use more paste, or try one of those 'metal pads' as the heat exchange material.

Coollaboratory Liquid Metal Pad is this what you are referring to? They any good and would it help me avoid lapping my concave gpu core?

Oh I have come to the conclusion by the way

The stock cooler does a decent job cooling the gpu in my fto2 case. It's just too noisy

So I am basically going to try and find a way to replace the fan on the stock cooler with something less noisy. Already lapped the stock cooler. It feels a lot better

I have same setup, with the GPU running at 850mhz (1150mv) and the hottest it gets is 70C in Crysis 2.

Tip. Don't have case side fan blowing onto the GPU cooler as hot air gets trapped, have it exhausting instead.

Back on stock cooler. I lapped it and temperatures seem better so the fans not getting too loud

Also I spread mx3 on the gpu core and cooler. And a little blob in the centre of gpu for good measure

Combuster got to 72c on 100% fan

Think I'm going to get one of those lian li 140mm pci exhaust fans to help shift the heat from around the gpu
