Hey,

I'm currently using a 4:3 19" TFT monitor with a 17" crt as a second display. The CRT has packed up due to a power spike and old age, so i was thinking of replacing it.

The current trend seems to be widescreen for gaming, why is this? Finally what is the equivalent size for a widescreen monitor to sit next to a 19" not widescreen? I did some playing on the TV calculator and got 23.3"!!!!

Would I be best going for 23" or 24" considering cheap is my priority and I'm not a hugely serious gamer.

You would be correct, if the actual picture sizes of CRT's and TFT's were the same. But they aren't - xxx" TFT is bigger than xxx" CRT.

There was a handy comparison charge posted here a while back, which shows that a 18" 4x3 TFT is very roughly the same size as a 19" CRT - but as those don't exisit, your closest bet would be a 19" 4x3 TFT's - they are very nice to use for everyday desktop work.

Having said all that... a 22-23" TFT is definatly the sweet spot at the moment for the most cost-effective display for your money.
