Slightly older fps games with an active community

Hello all,

Owner of a decent laptop but not good enough for the latest and greatest bf3/mw3 etc. Runs css, tf2 etc fine but I've played them to death over the years and fancy something new. Perhaps an old unreal game or something?

Third person shooters like red dead redemption or all points bulletin are good too as long as the community is decent and active.

Any suggestions?

UT99 still has a very active community as does Quake III.

Quake Live is very good if you can deal with the steep learning curve. I suggest you download qtracker, it is a great program for finding old games. You can add them to your list and refresh the available servers to see how many people are playing, then you can decide if it's worth buying that old game or not.
