I have a desktop and a laptop, both on the same homegroup, both running windows 7, and both have the same username and password..

maybe it's the fact that I have the same username and password which is allowing me to do this, however, I find that I can simply click on

Network > "coumputer name" > Users > "my name" > my documents

and voila. I have free access to the files

I know that in XP I had to enter the password and username each and every time.

Is this connection secure? the last thing I want to do is someone on my network having free access to my user files.

if u really wanted to, u could adjust the share permissions for my documents.

but as both are joined on the same homegroup, this is prolly y theres no other security.

other pcs on the network wont be able to join your homegroup without ur password

Sorry I don't think ive explain myself properly. I dont actually have a homegroup set up.

as when I got into homegroup it says "no other devices in the homegroup available"

What I've done is entered MSHOME as "workgroup" id during windows 7 setup. So now if I go to "network" in windows explorer, it shows my two machines and I can browse each others user files.

I do have a password set up for logins, however it has never prompted me for a password, so I'm worrried a 3rd part sharging the broadband hub who has MSHOME as the "wrokgroup" can easilly access my files.

Go into network and sharing options turn off public folder sharing.

then goto my computer and network then go into your machine right click folder then select advanced sharing and unshare it. job done.

If you're using common usernames and passwords on the two machines then I'd expect that you'd be able to share resources.

If you're concerned, why don't you just temporarily change the password on one of the machines and see what happens?

I've never used a 'consumer' version of Windows 7, but I assume it is still possible to set the permissions manually if you need/want to.
