Slim 980?

Firstly Hi!!

I have only recently replaced my 2 970's with a 980, the KFA2 GeForce GTX 980 "Hall of Fame Edition" but due to a move around at home I needed to downsize my pc. This was no problem, I had a mitx case and mobo here from a build I never finished so I am now using these. Only problem is, the HOF is 49mm thick and is pushed right up against the side. I see some cards are up to 10mm slimmer. Does anyone have any recommendations? I can sell the HOF as its 1 month and like new so that shoudln't be a problem. I have no intention on overclocking in this new mitx setup.

Thanks in advance

Chris

What case is it? Might be worth modding that instead of downgrading to a different card.

Normally in tighter situations the reference coolers work best but they wont boost as high as your HOF so you will be missing performance

It's a Cooltek W1. It's a nice little case, it's the HOF that's a beast!! Not to sure about modding the case though, I'm not to good at that kind of thing. I'm not overly worried about losing the boost on the card, I game at either 1080p or 1440 depending on the title. I have the Rog Swift so 1440 is its preferred choice. Maybe a reference is my only option

Nice case, I have the W2. So does the side still go on? seems like it should be fine as the side of the case is perforated the card should still be able to get fresh air.

Having seen your case now I cant see any reason not to go for custom cooled card like you have now.

If it were my money I'd go EVGA as they look good and have excellent warranties. Also hold their value a little better because of their warranties.

one of these,

but if im honest I'm not to knowledgeable on the 980's as I haven't looked at buying them to know who makes the best version

Well I've decided to move the HOF on, that's definite. Even an extra 10mm clearance will help, stop the card from pushing the door out. I'm not using the HOF to its full potential anyway, deserves to be in the hands of an overclocker!!

I wish they would come out with slim single slot near-top tier cards again, The 8800GT even against the 8800GTX was only marginally behind it in most games and benches but was a lot sleeker looking -

Performance was indeed great, but it ran very hot. This would likely be the case for current cards too, either that or a less efficient cooler would allow for no boost clocks.

Just an update on this. I decided to go for the EVGA reference 980. Everything is good now, the side panel closes and leaves a gap and the shorter length has provided me with slightly better cable management. It is a shame though as the HOF is a great card, be sad to say goodbye!!
