Local hmv have the 320 slim for 130ish, was wondering would it be worth picking up at that price or get a super slim 12gb for same money and add a cheap hdd. The Belfast store here isn't closing so if it broke after a few months I hopefully could get another or a refund "hoping the latter knowing hmv". Opinions on the matter?

320GB Slim, as I think the super slims look a bit too plasticky, and then you also save some money and time as you wont need to put a larger HDD into it.

It is a preowned console, forgot to mention. I'm just not sure how hmv would hold up on the 12 month warranty side of things, especially as I'm sure in 3 months they won't have a console to replace it with. Would they refund?

Oh, if the slim is a preowned console and the super slim is new, then I would go for the superslim for warranty issues incase hmv go again within the next 12months. Even if it means buying a £40 or so HDD to put into it. And I would live with the looks of the thing.

However, if both were preowned which is probably unlikely for the cost, then I would go back to the 320GB slim.

Just checking, can you upgrade the HDD in a super slim then? My 60gig original PS3 just died on me and I'm looking to replace it. If I could reuse the hard drive in a super slim that would be perfect for me. Going to try reflowing the old ps3 too just on the off chance, but if it doesn't work would be good to know if the hdd could be used again.

first of all it would work, but none of the data would be retrievable, it is locked to the original console. therefore you would need to wipe it before you could use it.

therefore it would be utterly pointless to use a tiny 6+ years old drive in a new PS3 which comes with a much larger and newer drive in the first place, which will most likely be a lot faster and run cooler too.

i bought a 640GB drive for £25 iirc for my ps3 off ebay to replace my 60GB one.

i would try re-flowing first, if it works, back up your data/games to an external usb drive straight away. this could then be transferred to a new console, should it not last long.

super slim has no HDD I thought, instead has 12gb flash memory, so what he is asking is can he use his old 60gig drive on the super slim, which the answer is yes but as you say will need wiped.

there are 2 models.

one has the basic 12gb ssd, the other has a 500gb hdd.

i would buy the 500gb one, or the 12gb as well as a larger drive and install it myself depending on which is cheaper.

but i wouldnt use the 60gb one in a new console, his ps3 has died most likely due to heat over time (the cooling system of the ps3 isn't that great), therefore i couldn't trust the hdd to last long, plus 60gb just isnt enough these days.

either way i would cut my losses and bin the lot if it couldnt be reflowed. otherwise backup and then bin it.

Not pointless if you don't need any more than 60 gig, which I don't, and were looking for the cheapest possible replacement to tide you over till the ps4 came out. I'm talking about the 12gb one btw.

I successfully reflowed my original ps3 though anyway and it is quieter than before, as well as staying on. Also I highly doubt a hdd would have been damaged in any way from a slightly overheating cpu situated several inches away in a ventilated case. I will use it till it dies again then go for the cheapest I can get and use my 60g drive. Surely you use if for anything other than storing your save games. If you were filling it with films, media or digital downloads then fair enough, but thats not what I do.

Both will let you play ps3 games, browse the internet and download from psstore.

Don't understand why people would care if the console is plasticky or has a slide disc tray...

I have the super slim and it has problems with crashing and needing me to hold the power button down for 20 seconds to get it back going again.

Not sure if this is common with all ps3's but I'd go with a slim incase.

Yes, I chuckled when I read, robgmun's comment.

The super slim runs quieter and cooler and uses a lot less power. However, I've never had that problem you're encountering. It supposedly only uses 193 watt. Though on my energy reading monitor while gaming and then shutting the console down later on, it only seems to use over 100watt.

I have a fat one.. and then choice a 2nd hand slim; of a mate so it had good user history over a super slim for a 2nd unit. Sorry but cosmetics does matter for house hold goods and the super slim does not follow sony's old design ideas but seems to follow sony's new design ideas.

Mad to buy a Super Slim over a Slim, it just made to to save costs and is arguably louder because of its design (when the BD is spinning). Id also not be that happy that the whole bd drive lens assembly is so exposed once open...

ps3ud0
