Slimline cooling

Hi,

Need to get a cpu cooling solution that has a maximum height of 56mm.

I'm really struggling to find one for a i5 6600K LGA 1151 socket.

Not too concerned with whether air or water cooled.

This will sit on a Asus Maximus Impact VIII motherboard.

I've got the Noctua NH-L9i in my mini-server (4770T CPU with an Asus ITX board) which has a height of 37mm and does a cracking job of keeping it cool and is virtually silent. Mind you it's a low TDP processor so the same heatsink might struggle a bit more with a 6600K, especially if you overclock it.

Ooh, the scythe looks good....well below the maximum and according to the manufacturer's site says its compatible with 1151...hoping that means it will be on with the i5 6600k?

Good point...I would not overclock by default but I wonder if that is a bit too tame for the processor. I really have been lazy and got the best without worrying about the size of cooling before. This mini ITX case is a challenge!

According to this page you should be fine with the 6600K, even with a bit of overclocking:

IIRC if a cooler says it fits 1155, 1150 or 1151 then it will fit all of them as they all use the same mounting method/specification.

Hmm, the FAQ linked on that page is not that conclusive. Sounds like the cooler can only just cope and the ambient temperature will likely be higher as it will be sitting in a kit rack. I think I need to get some rack cooling too

Finally

Going for a Phanteks PH-TC90LS CPU COOLER.

Handles up to 130W TDP and fits nicely with some headroom plus it keeps a small footprint.

Will report back on how it performs.
