Are there any decent CRTs available in black in the 20-21 inch range these days? (widescreen an all!)?

I guess one that is somewhere between a TFT and standard CRT in terms of thickness/depth ??

Not quite ready for LCD yet (or LCD is not ready for me yet!)

erm i beleive there are CRT TV's in development (and have been for some time) that should out perform all current TV's with regard to picture quality colour sharpness etc and they are as thick/deep as current LCD screens.

but its been over a year since i read about them so i cant provide any links, if/when they do come out they will not be cheap, just get a good LCD for now unless u have the space for a CRT that that size

isnt the new crts called SED? iv seen some from pics at CES at they look so sweet!

Very few CRTs being made full stop at the moment, if any, and SED is still showing no signs of appearing (and when it does it'll be TVs initially not monitors). Only widescreen CRT monitor I ever heard of was the Sony FW900 but they're hard to find and it would have to be used since they're out of production. There are 4:3 21" black CRTs available used on the usual auction sites. None of them are slimline though, I don't think there's any been a slimline CRT PC monitor, just those Samsung CRT semi-HD TVs (which were supposed to be poor from what I read).

So the answer is no :)

I totally know where you are coming from LCD tech just isnt as mature as CRT right now. Especially having to run at native res (or lose image quality), sucks. In 2yrs I suspect that LCD will match CRT image quality.

FWIW, I bought a 24" OCUK LCD monitor. I was coming from a 19" Sony CRT monitor. For general internet browsing and desktop stuff, the LCD is every bit as good as the CRT. The CRT pulls away when it comes to video though - it leaves the LCD in the dust. LCD then begins to catch back up when the resolution of the video increases.

I would still prefer a large Trinitron CRT monitor for out and out image quality though.

With regards to slimline CRT TVs: Samsung did release them. I believe the maximum size was 32" and it was a HD set. It sufferred from some serious problems with image quality and due to poor sales, it never really took off. Some info/discussion here.

SED is a future technology that may or may not take off. Until we see it in the shops, at a good price, in use and giving good image quality, dont assume that it will "make it".

I really didn't want to go TFT but did in the end and found that I didn't really notice the difference. I'm somewhat more casual than a lot of people on these forums however, I game at 1280x1024 and only for a couple of hours every few days.

SED has gone on the long finger for now. I think some major legal stuff between canon and toshiba has held it back, along with crashing LCD prices.

The big players are happy to keep selling LCD - the factorys and processes are already established now. They'll milk LCD technology for all it's worth before they release SED.

If you look hard enough you can get a FDW900 (flat, compared to the FW900) for less than 50. I got mine for £36, the guy had 5 to choose from. It's about the same depth as a 21 inch CRT. I.e. about 45cm.

The only 'slim line' CRT I can think of is the old phillips short neck tube . I only saw one of these and the 19" was the same depth as a typical 17" CRT.

Ive bought an ocuk 24" value LCD monitor. I tell you what though, I would dump it for one of those Sony 24" CRT monitors. The problem is that those monitors are not easily available. If you go via an auction, then generally you have to pick it up yourself, which might not be feasible.
