slipped disc = agony

Hard to say really. It wasn't a specific accident that I was aware of, I just woke up one day with a back-ache that gradually got worse and became agony over the period of a week or so. After I went to the doctor it lasted for about a fortnight.

I was doing a lot of biking at the time, so it's just that it's the most likely cause.

Had my bike stolen since then, so haven't done much since my back problem :D

I had a problem towards the end of last summer with my back but I think it was sciatic. After I slowed down the biking it went.

My dad often put his back out as a builder, not being able to bend or walk or use both legs properly. He would however often drive back home like it using is hand to lift his foot on and off the clutch!

Basically, doctor told him to quit or be in a wheelchair by the time he was 50. Hes now a taxi driver. But when it happens ive never see someone in so much pain! Its just lucky that when he fell of a roof he nocked himself out and didnt suffer the pain of a fractured disk!

But yes, I fully understand what your going though, its not nice. Ive got back problems of my own (nowhere near as bad). Being tall and slouching, my dad leaning on my sholder in the past when his back was out, and hitting a tree at 30mph all contribute to basically a constant dull ache and stiffness, with random muscle pain and seizes down either side. if i flex backwards it all clicks and grinds and losens up for a little bit. Really should see a chiro i think...

Fortunately I have never slipped a disc but I have suffered Sciatica which is agonising and I have had to see a Chiropractor once a week on and off for the last 2 years. :( Costs an absolute fortune.

I've got similar issues mate - being tall has its advantages and disadvantages. I've been told that due to my size (6ft 8) it's unlikely I will ever be able to class myself as "back-ache" free.

Ive had to learn how to lift properly due to my job (lifting a 20kg 12 year old child when your 5ft 2 isnt always easy - especially when hes tired and hes like a dead weight)
The trick is as others have mentioned to bend your knees and not your back.
Thankfully, touch wood ive never hurt my back yet, my knees do hurt after a day at work though.

See a good Physiotherapist. Spent about £3000 over 3 years but its worth it.

luckily my wife is a physiotherapist (specializing in cardiorespiratory intensive care) so knows who to ask for the right techniques, luckily though she's an expert in mackenzian accupuncture, which gives me a great analgesic relief for about 6 hours.
