Hi i just recently purchased a HIS 4870 from here and im getting very poor FPS in games. Games seem to jump when i turn the mouse and don't feel smooth at all. Here are my specs im using:

AMD 545 phenom 2
4gd ddr2 1066
ATI 4870
550w psu 2-3 years old
windows vista 64
All latest drivers and updates

Even on low graphics crysis seems to jump and the fps it quite low, any advice would be great.
 
i was using a nvidia geforce 9600gt. ive used driver cleaner to get rid of all the left overs nvidia ones. The power supply is a unbranded cheapo one
550w. i think its 30 or 20amp on the 12v rail.
 
You need to monitor CPU and GPU clocks while playing a game to ensure something is not switching !

See You have a Micky mouse PSU, I doubt that is up to it, without looking at labels You can tell the quality of PSU's by the weight ! those cheap 500W things are nowhere close to supplying the current where you need it.

The Card Manufacturers fit multiple 6/8 pin power connectors not because they need all the power, they do it so muppets stop for a second and think why does my psu not have a connector...but I guess they then go buy an adapter :D
 
i checked rivatune and the temps are 78+ full load, the clock speeds reach what the cards says it should. ive ordered a 750w psu now, if that dont fix the problem do you think overclockers will let me change my card for anorther, ive had it a week now.

You got a new boxed 4870 then, there in normally a big label in there warning about power requirements.......Say hello to kermit from me :D
 
You're getting 25fps on Very High with a 4870 and a 545? That's pretty good going. I normally play on High at 1680 x 1050 and get a solid 40fps. I guess the lower res really makes a difference.
 
No, Power supply's are the most important part of most things including PC's but boring to many people and so often overlooked.

I would think Your CPU is the bottleneck now but remember Crysis is a real killer for any Rig, look around for a modded config file to help the performance
