Slow ADSL Speed

Hi,

My parents are on Tiscali (now TalkTalk?) ADSL and I've thought for a while that their downstream speed is poor.

I've just checked their router stats against the site in the sticky, and it says they should get 7224Kbps down - they are currently getting 2043Kbps!

So my two questions are: why is this so low, and how, if it's possible, can the speed be increased?

Cheers,

Here you go!

You should be able to sync up to 6500-7000kbps roughly. Just say that you don't think you're getting the speed you should be able to get and ask to be put on a higher profile.

Have you tried the plugging in to the master socket technique? Involves taking the front plate off your master BT wall socket and plugging the filter directly in to the master socket behind

I'm pretty sure that if you are on an LLU service you don't have 'IP Profiles' as such...

Do you turn the router off a lot? Every night?

On LLU, if you keep dropping the line (turning the modem off) it will see the drop as the line being unstable. It will then raise your target SNR to something higher, causing a lower sync rate but more stability.

You will need to ring your ISP and ask for the target SNR to be reset to about 6 is normal. This will boost your sync to about 8000-12000 I would expect.

You need to leave the modem on though, if you turn it off every night the whole process will keep repeating and you will be ringing your ISP every week getting them to reset it.

The speed will probably increase on its own, but if you ring it will happen faster. If you speak to someone who doesnt know what they are talking about, just ask them to reset your line and then dont reset/turn off the modem for at least a week
