slow at opening files over network

hi all, having problems opening MS docs over a VPN.
its taking approx 45 seconds to open a small file - only 30-40kb in size.
the broadband connection is approx 7-8mb.

any idea's?

i've tried opening word/excel first then clicking on the file I want, but its still taking an age... any idea's welcome...

Windows Explorer isn't the most bandwidth friendly of interfaces even without the security overhead of a VPN!

What's the upload speed like at the other end? New issue or constant problem?
