Slow boot, delay in Windows sounds on new build, clean install.

Got my build built.

Installed Windows 7, Premium 64bit. Installed most of the gear off of the Gigabyte Mobo disk and updated bios to F3.

But theres a problem, the PC seems to take ages to boot.. I get the 'Welcome' and then black screen with my cursor before the desktop appears.. then many seconds later I finally hear the noise that accompanies the 'Welcome' screen and the other sound it makes when your desktop appears..

Whats going on?
Help appreciated.

You mentioned that you installed the stuff from the motherboard disk.
Would these extra installs include unnecessary features and startup items that could be making your PC take longer than it needs?

I'd start by check your boot options in windows
(hit start and type system) then select system configuration, startup items.

Hope that gets you somewhere :)
 
Cheers for the replies.. I've got some data here! and an interesting problem relating to AHCI.

Okay so the first thing that pops up when windows has finished booting is the Gigabyte update manager.
So I uninstalled it.
I timed this from the moment 'Starting Windows' came up to when I hear the Windows sound on the desktop.

So without it I got 47 seconds.

So I reinstalled it just to see..
Did two reboots: 1:22 and 1:18 !!

Uninstalled final time and did two reboots.
35secs and 44secs.

So that appears to be the issue there.
Are those boot times average for Windows 7 64bit with a SATA drive?? (Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s 32MB)

Also, heres the weird issue, I changed the setting in bios from IDE to AHCI and it would then only boot via my other drive which is connected via Esata in an enclosure.. It doesn't detect the other drives until the second screen.. Seems odd.

If you installed Windows with your BIOS set to IDE mode then your OS actually disables the AHCI drivers. Let me see if I can find the article on how to enable them.

Also that sounds like that uninstall did the job :)
Boot up time sounds great, any 2nd opinions?
Have you checked your SystemConfig just to make sure there is no other junk starting when you turn on your computer?

You're not supposes to change from IDE to AHCI after you've installed Windows.

Change it back and hopefully all will be well.

And AHCI makes no difference with a mechanical HDD. IDE mode is fine.

I did read this causes issues once you've installed Windows, but its at IDE now.

I've also tried to overclock using a guide or two. However odd thing is all settings save, yet when in Windows nothing appears to have changed, CoreTemp and CPU-Z claim still at 33.09ghz. Any ideas on this?

You may be right.

NCQ may have some small benefit:

Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a technology designed to increase performance of SATA hard disks under certain conditions by allowing the individual hard disk to internally optimize the order in which received read and write commands are executed. This can reduce the amount of unnecessary drive head movement, resulting in increased performance (and slightly decreased wear of the drive) for workloads where multiple simultaneous read/write requests are outstanding, most often occurring in server-type applications.

I wish I could overclock to 33.09GHz :eek:

I assume you mean 3.309GHz.

Try running Prime95 with CPU-Z open and you should see the reported speed increase if your overclock is OK.
 
Aye aye, newbie like typo ;)

Are there any recommended guides for OC'ing 2500k with this board? I saw the Bit-tech one and assumed it didn't work as it wasn't showing but didn't run a stress test so will try that again.. But wouldn't mind some other suggestions.

I did a stress test with Linx on stock to see if i'd not failed with the Kuhler in my build

Temperatures look fine for stock speed. I assume you stressed for a reasonable amount of time.

Overclocking settings should be similar to the UD4 in the Bit-tech guide but I wouldn't change the base clock from 100.

Thanks for the heads up about the temps. I'm learning..
I've got push/pull config on the Kulhers radiator but they are different fans so not sure if that makes less efficient. Also ones connected to sysfan1 and the other to the Kuhler. Wasn't sure if it was reccomended to use a splitter so they both run off the Kuhler.. Also not sure which bios settings to use for the CPUfan as its powering the Kuhler not just a fan.. Sure I read somewhere it had to be a certain setting but lost where I read it!

Just turn the multiplier up to 40 and keep increasing the voltage until it passes prime95. (I'm assuming you have some sort of aftermarket cooling)

Yeah like i said above I have the Antec Kuhler, one of the self contained water coolers. The temps should show i'm not just on stock cooler right?

Noticed you have similiar spec to me, i5 2500k, 8gb Ripjaws, :)
