Hi all. Trying to figure out why my newly built system is taking a while to boot.

Motherboard is asus z690 maximus extreme running a 12900k (stock profile or OC profile). 32gb ddr5 5200 on two sticks

From pressing case ‘on’ button to seeing the boot logo on monitor, takes 26 seconds or so. And a further 12-14 seconds to get to windows ‘welcome’ text. So approx 48 seconds overall boot time from ‘on’ to windows welcome. By contrast, my old system (4790k on a z97x-soc) was much quicker.

- This system has a few aquacomputer controllers attached (as did the old system).

- I have fast boot enabled in bios. It's the latest bios.

- I am hiding the post and set it to 2 seconds for the window in which to press F2.

- Windows 10 pro 64Bit OS is running from an NVME m.2.

- I have disabled loads of ‘startup’ software and various things in MSC boot window in windows.

- I don’t have any usb sticks or external drives plugged in, or any gaming peripherals. I have a usb hub connected (same as on the old system)

All in, boot up from on button to windows welcome text is approx 48 seconds or so. Old system on new install with no software loaded in half that, and still faster than this new system even with software installed. Can’t work it out.

Any ideas how I can speed this up or what might be wrong? System runs perfectly other than this.

Much appreciated :)

Hmm. Seems like this ‘issue’ is very common on asus z690 boards. I have since found quite a few articles on this topic, two examples below.

So is it just Asus boards with this problem, or is it ddr5 with the problem, or is it Asus boards with ddr5? I can’t seem to find anything conclusive on this.

Mainly ASUs, as far as I know.
Used ASUS for quite some time but this time the MSI tomahawk was perfect for what I needed and cheaper than some naked ASUS options.
There’s also compatibility issues with some air coolers and AIOs.

So is the MSI a quick booter?

Mine boots fine. Slightly slower than I was used to with X570 + Ryzen 3900x, but never took excessively long. Takes a bit longer if I switch around RAM when taking the system apart, but that’s the only scenario.
Leaving all on auto, without any overclock tool, I get 100MHz more boost with MSI at same voltage and temperature, compared to the Z690-F.
Maybe the main difference is that I’m using DDR4 with MSI and was using DDR5 with ASUS.
Don’t think the DDR5 was defective anyway. Pretty good Corsair 5600 with good timings, worked as described. Maybe the way CPU or motherboard communicates with RAM. Not sure.
Would be interesting hear from someone using ASUS and DDR4.
