Got girlfriends parents pc here, taking ages to post. Managed to switch on the post display last night and noticed that it registers 1024 memory ok, but then another 10mins to register the rest ok along with shared video memory.

First thoughts are that the memory is playing up and it's taking the time to check it. Ran a memtest and all was ok though

Personally - I wouldn't touch it! It's the proverbial poison chalice.

What, if anything, happened before it started posting slowly?

I would definitely reset the CMOS, possibly even check for a boot sector virus and even look for a CMOS virus. They are almost unheard of, but not unknown.

Have you checked the boot order? It's not trying to check a CD in an optical drive or something? It could also be corruption in the HDD boot sector as generally the checks are CPU, memory, video then HDD subsystem. Once it's found the boot drive it normally hands over to that.

But I would like some more information too. I take it that it's not just come back from the purple shirts having had it's tune-up or anything?

And if it's just had a jolt the CPU cooler could be loose and the CPU overheating. That would make it throttle (if it's Intel) and run very slowly.

ok cheers. Her dad is going to try and get a new battery from work and i'll replace that, while at it I'll check everything else inside.

As far as I know, nothing has altered with it, but unsure as to when it started.

Don't want to touch it, hate touching pc's that aren't my own, always go wrong
