Slow broadband speed - how to improve it

You need to be paying line rental to someone to be able to have a broadband connection, so you should have a landline to be able to call them from (and if that is with sky, then calls to their CS department is free).

Yea sorry, I meant I don't have a land line phone... obviously the connection but no actual phone.

Also all Sky's advertised numbers are '03' based so if you have inclusive minutes on your mobile then you call to Sky will be included.

That's good news, thank you!

....................

I sent a letter off yesterday to their complaints department. I'm now getting 1.26mbps

To be honest, if they can't get the problem fixed and you're not tied into a contract you should just tell them where to go by changing providers (if you can get fibre, plusnet have a deal on their 40/20 package where you only pay £3.99 a month for the first 6 months and £14.99 (yes, that's £5 less then what you'd have to pay with sky and you'd get a higher upload speed) a month after that, and you don't even have to contact sky to get any codes since plusnet will do a live takeover of the line).

The problem being is when I called up about 3 weeks ago I stupidly believed they would fix the issue and signed up to a new contract at the same time as being offered a very good deal for Sky Sports.

...

Just got back from a 5 day trip somewhere, Re-tested speed and it is 0.88mbps.

Just logged on to Sky to check my package and found this:

Notably:

1) I should have between 2mbps and 5mbps
2) Some sort of line testing is in progress - probably on the back of my complaint letter...

Where do i stand if the line doesn't improve - in terms of the new contract I signed up to. I'd rather just leave and go to another provider.

The 63dB attenuation is resistance on the line, either you have a very long line or you have something connected to your phone socket raising it massively. As you have Sky, make sure any sky box phone connections are behind microfilters, not before them. Sky engineers have a habit of installing them the wrong way round.

You might be able to move to another provider without paying any penalty to sky as there was a little note in the initial paperwork that came from sky with the estimates for broadband speed stating that I could leave without penalty if the connection speed didn't match their estimates, and since you recently entered into a new contract with sky you might be able to use that to your advantage if the speed doesn't reach the minimum speed quoted by Monday.

Are plus.net a good broadband provider?

I would just pay a bit more to Sky for Fibre Optic but i feel a bit pee'd off now and so I'm reluctant to do that.

Plus in the past when I've had a dedicated ISP it's always been far better, both in speed/connectivity and service.

I'm getting 0.8mbps so nowhere near 2mb.

I live just near Reading - and I do get 4G at home and it's pretty decent, much quicker than my broadband in fact.

Problem solved then. Just get 3 unlimited 4G and tether (for £15 a month)

and cancel Sky broadband

You probably wont even need your phone line
